Who here has the oldest working computer?

Bubble gum iMac running System 7.6 here.

Though I never use it except for legacy files.

I dunno.

franksolich uses Windows95.

Is that an old one?

1. I'd sell my soul for a working Atari 800 XL with a full complement of games on floppies.

I miss those 8-bit computers so much.

7. I use emulators all the time, but it's just not the same somehow.

I still love listening to the beeps from the floppy drive coming over the speaker on the old 19" color tv, and the feel of those old Atari joysticks and paddle controllers.

10. Hey it's cool! I couldn't afford one right now anyway, not even for ultra-cheap.

And my favorite games were Spelunker, Encounter, Leader Board Golf, Buried Bucks, Rainbow Walker, Getaway!, River Raid, Pinball Construction Set, The Great American Cross-Country Road Race, Zone Ranger, Zenji, Flip & Flop, and probably another 20-30 I can't recall at the moment.

There's lots of other primitive comments, but it's all geek to me.

...and the anti-virus stuff quit working years ago...do think mine might be infected?

My desktop computer is Windows98, because I have ten years of Quicken files on it.

I finally figured out how to migrate all those old files into Quicken 2011 on my laptop, so I guess the old desktop will soon go into a garbage bag.

Does anybody know if Windows Vista is newer, or older, than Windows XP?

This computer, which is now pretty much burned out (but still hobbling along, and I plan to keep using it until it finally flies up into computer heaven) is Windows XP, and the new used one I have, swept clean and reconditioned by a professional, is Windows Vista.

I have the feeling I went a little backwards here, but not a big deal.

Unlike most, I use a computer just for word-processing, and on the internet, message-boards.

I don't do the movies and music and games and somesuch; can't hear.

And so for me, low-tech is best tech.

I used to have a collection of working relics.

An 8088 being the earliest of them - then a couple of 486's and some early pentiums.

Walked into my office one day, looked around and thought "The f*** do I have all this s*** for".

Filled the pickup (twice) with old computer crap , working or not and hucked it out at the local rubbish dump.

Vista is newer than XP.

Technically, XP is Windows 5, Vista is Windows 6. But Vista actually had a lot of problems so I maintained my work / production on XP pro, and in fact still use it until I can vet out Win 7 64 bit, which may take a couple more service packs.

My previous computer was over ten years old when I replaced it.  I spent $400 on an AMD single-core 1.5Ghz chip with 1GB of memory and a 133Mhz motherboard and stuffed it into a case with a 300 watt power supply.

My new computer is four times as fast with twice as much memory, ten times the storage space and cost half as much.

I have several old, functional PCs stored away.

Vic-20 , Commodore64, Commodore 128D, Amiga 2000, Amiga 3000, Ti99-4A, Apple 2E, Radio Shack TRS-80 Pocket Computer, Atari XL. I collect these things.

I have other interesting hardware as well, such as an original IBM 5150 PC case that I intend to modify and install a new system in and use as my main desktop computer.

Just a couple weeks back, I managed to salvage the first videogame I had written for Vic-20 off of a thirty year old 'Datasette' I found in an old box.

I had to download (free) two previous versions of Quicken, then move my backup files to the older of the two, and from there to the newer one. Once the files were in that version, they could be read by the new Quicken 2011, and the migration was complete.

Limited backward compatibility is my only gripe with Quicken. They try to force you to buy new versions every few years.

I avoided that for actually more than ten years. I just checked, and I have all my personal transactions back to 1/1/1999, over ten thousand checks and debits.

My Vic-20 and Commadore 64 gave up the ghost about 10 years ago. I do have a 386-sx that still runs. Every now and again I will boot it up... DOS 3.6 I think... and run the disk refresh program I had from 22 years ago to keep the hard drive's electrons refreshed. Dunno why I do it. I guess I just want to see how long the thing will work.  Maybe 20 years from now if it still works I will donate it to a museum. Thing cost me $2,000 when I bought it. Still got the basic programs on it I wrote to keep track of inventory at the restaurant when I had the old Xerox with the two 5.25 inch floppy drives from the mid 80's.
