Latest polls show 55 seat GOP senate majority is quite possible

The latest polling data shows Republicans gaining strength in several of the races for U.S. Senate seats and now indicates a very real possibility of a 55 seat majority after this year's election. Missouri Congressman Todd Akin seems to have largely recovered from his “legitimate rape” gaffe, after apologizing to voters for it, and his campaign has taken a small lead against incumbent Senator Claire McCaskill.

Four states have changed since the last GOP2112 analysis of the senate races of August 23, and all of those states are moving in the direction of the GOP candidates for those seats. Ohio has moved from toss-up to leans Republicans while Michigan and Missouri have moved from leaning Democrats to leaning Republican. The Hawaii senate race shows signs of growing closer and is moved from likely Democrat to toss-up.

For this analysis, the project is 55 Republican senators, 44 Democratic senators and one toss-up race. This is a gain of three senate seats for Republicans since the August 23 projection of 52 Republicans, 47 Democrats and one toss-up.
