GOP strategists mull McCain ‘blowout’

Hmmm . . . too bad he doesn't have coattails . . . or does he?

GOP strategists mull McCain ‘blowout’

By DAVID PAUL KUHN | 5/23/08 5:29 PM EST

It sounds crazy at first. Amid dire reports about the toxic political environment for Republican candidates and the challenges facing John McCain, many top GOP strategists believe he can defeat Barack Obama — and by a margin exceeding President Bush’s Electoral College victory in 2004.

At first blush, McCain’s recent rough patch and the considerable financial disadvantage confronting him make such predictions seem absurd. Indeed, as Republicans experience their worst days since Watergate, those same GOP strategists are reticent to publicly tout the prospect of a sizable McCain victory for fear of looking foolish.

But the contours of the electoral map, combined with McCain’s unique strengths and the nature of Obama’s possible vulnerabilities, have led to a cautious and muted optimism that McCain could actually surpass Bush’s 35-electoral-vote victory in 2004. Though they expect he would finish far closer to Obama in the popular vote, the thinking is that he could win by as many 50 electoral votes.

By post-war election standards, that margin is unusually small. Yet it’s considerably larger than either Bush’s 2004 victory or his five-electoral-vote win in 2000.

The reason why this is good news is this:  SCOTUS nominations.  McCain is decidedly pro-life, and I've found that pro-life judges (or justices, if you prefer) are conservative in other areas, as well.

I ran across a Dick Morris column about how the Republicans were going to lose big in the Congress this year.

When was the last time Dick Morris was right about anything?

Well, he hates mrs. clinton so he isn't totally off base...

I don't think a blowout is unrealistic.

Caution, though: there's w-a-a-a-y too much time left in this campaign, and anything can happen.

But provided John McCain keeps his nose clean and gets the Hell busy paying attention to Republicans who aren't comfortable with him, I think it's realistic, a blowout.

That however is a pretty chancey "provided."

As for "coat-tails," I'm not sure, I don't think so.

This is why I'm, personally, worrying less and less about the presidential campaign, and more and more about the congressional campaigns, although my feelings are that Republicans won't do too badly.  Not great, but not badly, either.

Coattails could be a thing of the past, voters tend to try to split party control.

I'm more optimistic about a big Juan win in November (against BHO) than even in this article, but it's still to far out not to go all out to win. Juan's foreign policy is also a kicker to me. :cheersmate:

The fourteenth of NEVER.  I can't understand why anyone even gives that asshole airtime, let alone pays him for it.
