I'll never forget the day I read some college was introducing a new course, the subject material being Lil' Kim.  If you don't know who Lil' Kim is, don't worry you're not missing a whole lot.  I remember thinking how odd in politics and popular culture that a Condi Rice (a doctor, a Secretary of State, a history maker) could be scorned as a sell-out.  An Aunt Tom.  A house negro.  An oreo.  And yet... a college course on Lil' Kim exists.  An institution of higher learning deliberated and decided to put together this course.  For real credits.  That's the model for young black females.  Not Dr. Rice.  Lil' Kim.  

I know I'm not the only one who sees how ****ed up that is.

Yeah, IIRC I believe she pretty much came from nothing special in the money department, just an average family with positive values, and she is mainly a self-made success story professionally, with her family mostly supplying 'Just' the moral and ethical compass.
