Horrific: South African Police Massacre 30+ Striking Miners

Here's the actual AP headline and story which I've cross-posted in LB: Heartbreaking.

South Africa police say they killed 30+ miners

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — South African police officers killed more than 30 miners who charged them at a Lonmin PLC platinum mine, authorities said Friday, as a national newspaper warned that a time bomb ticking over poor South Africans has exploded.

Thursday's shootings are one of the worst in South Africa since the end of the apartheid era, and came as a rift deepens between the country's governing African National Congress and an impoverished electorate confronting massive unemployment and growing poverty and inequality.

They "awaken us to the reality of the time bomb that has stopped ticking — it has exploded," The Sowetan newspaper said in an editorial. "Africans are pitted against each other ... fighting for a bigger slice of the mineral wealth of the country. In the end the war claims the very poor African -- again."

Police ministry spokesman Zweli Mnisi told The Associated Press on Friday that more than 30 people were killed on Thursday in the police volleys of gunfire during the strike, now a week old. He said an investigation into the shooting near Marikana, about 70 kilometers (40 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, is underway. Political parties and labor unions, including the ANC, called for an independent inquiry.

hard to believe that that kind of thing still happens.

but it was absolutely still a massacre.

4. sure enough, they had "machetes, clubs, and homemade spears"

I see the wounded aren't being treated in any hospitals and the government is airing "replay after replay" of the massacre for everyone to see. that should send them the message.

It's okay if blacks murder other blacks, no big deal.

Frank, I watched these clips a couple of times to understand what is going on.

I noticed that the cameras zeroed in on the White cops closely but tended to move back when the Black police were shooting.

South Africa brings to mind the Boars and the Zulu disputes and apartheid in that country.

It appears that integration is in full swing and this is not about race but Money.

How since the workers have no union can the owners of  the mine call in the police to force workers into the mines at low wages beats me.

Sounds allot like slavery to me, Listen up Chicago and Detroit, time to get off your butts and save every Penny and dime you have.    Your home land is  in need of the  influx of American Blacks that can and will help out your fellow country men and woman.    Is it not time the descendants of South Africa begin to think of the things they can do to make life a bit easier for those who still live there ????

American Black are the most educated blacks in the world, smart and sharp. Sending money does no good, only hands on application of the talents and education will help. When one thinks of the gifts the Black Americans have given to us to make America what it is today is really Amazing.  Science and Medical, technology, we need to appreciate the fact that the Blacks have given to us.  Had their ancestors never reached our shore, where would America be today ????

Has the Black comunity in America no shame for ignoring their home land just to sit and live on welfare and bitch about America ???      American Blacks can allways come home to America, so why not get the best and the brightest to go to their home land and make a huge difference in the lives of  their blood line ?

Next time I hear a African American bitch about Slavery in the US a hundred years ago, I may question them on why they do not spend 3 years in their home country.

Rant ended.

There is a lot more articles out there about the downward spiral in South Africa I had glossed over in regards to this incident and others.

Seriously, what did they think the transfer of power would bring?  I could have guessed it.  If you are white and live there, it might be time to have exit plans.  Within a decade it will be a wasteland.

From a CNN report.... :whatever:

It had to do with a vicious rivalry between two unions -- the dominant and established National Union of Mineworkers and the splinter Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union which has been encroaching on the former's role.

The two unions, accused of trying to outdo each other in negotiating wages, denied instigating the clashes.
I wonder if OmahaSteve has seen this?

While the initial walkout and protest focused on wages, the ensuing violence has been fueled by the struggles between the dominant National Union of Mineworkers and the upstart Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union. Disputes between the two unions escalated into violence earlier this year at another mine.

The self-wallDUded Cali seems to have left some important parts out of her whine.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

But-but-but !!1!!

Why would two unions fight ? If they are both interested in the common goal of a productive & well-compensated workforce, shouldn't they be good with cooperating with each other ?

It sounds like the nasty sort of fight a 1%er CEO would do to a business competitor, and that makes no sense. Rove, Koch, Blackwater, Boooosh, and The Illuminati must be involved

So the strikers -armed with deadly weapons- charge the police and people are surprised when the police fire into the strikers?

I know these are DUmmies, but what part of this was unexpected?

The police response.  The strikers expected a melee, not a repulsion before they got to the police.

Ah. So the strikers are DUmmies too. Pick up machetes and spears, charge men armed with guns, and expect a hand to hand fight.

Got it. This is Darwin in action.

Indeed. Unless you happen to be Chuck Norris, bringing a knife to a gun fight is almost always an ill-advised decision.

Union against union? sounds more like tribal warfare to me, after all that's what Africa is about, always has been. As far as South Africa is concerned what do they expect. You take a prosperous country ruled by whites and turn it over to a bunch of uneducated blacks (thanks Mandella)and you have what we see today. The total destruction of a country.
