05-23 day thread
« on: May 23, 2008, 07:01:39 AM »
I'm kind of burnt out on the primitives on Skins's island right now--thanks to Chris, who showed me a way of tracking down individual primitives (rather than just going over and seeing who's around)--I sort of did w-a-a-a-y too much "searching" and reading the past two days.

So I thought I would start a lounge thread, for a temporary change of pace.

We had a lot of rain here on the eastern slope of the Sandhills of Nebraska over the night; just lots and lots and lots of rain.  We don't mind the moisture, but really, Mother Nature needs to dump it on the western slope of the Sandhills, out by where dutch508, a survivor of the most devastating earthquake to strike Nebraska, was born and raised.  We like the water we get, but they need it more than we do.

Anybody have any special plans for the Memorial Day holiday?

I'm a traditionalist; I commemorate Memorial Day on its original date, May 30, every year.

In fact, it's damned near a religious holiday for me, after Christmas and Thanksgiving.  After the parents died, all the children always got together on May 30, and it was always a good, pleasant time (usually because it occurred on neutral territory, not at someone's place), but there's only one of us left any more.

Memorial Day's a contemplative holiday for me; I reflect upon all the dead, but put a little bit more emphasis on those who died to make, and keep, me (and everyone else) free.  And not only those who are now dead, but among the living, those who once fought to liberate the world from oppression and terror, and MOST ESPECIALLY those still fighting in this unending struggle.

This may sound corny or hokey, but in real life, every night before hitting the sack, usually when going around in the darkness outdoors taking a census of the cats, I pray it pleases God that those men and women fighting tyranny across the seas, that God preserve them, and allow them to flourish and prosper.

And as for those with a different fate, I thank God and them for their sacrifice.

That was nicely stated, frank!

It's a beautiful day, again, here in central Ohio. I am also once again studying, but the semester is winding to a close in just a short couple of weeks so that's another one down.

My youngest son's birthday was yesterday and his party is actually going to be on Sunday. One of those lingering all day bbq on the lawn type of affairs so Monday will be far more relaxing and easy-going.

The rain is finally gone from WV for a little while, thank goodness!  Seriously...a few days of sunshine will be very welcomed!

My youngest in on a field trip today....kind of a lame one, just going to a park for the day, but at least he gets to run around with his friends for the day instead of sitting in school.

Two weeks of school left, then a week of dance rehearsals and 3 days of recital, and I get a break from activities!  Yay!

No majorly special plans for the weekend...enjoying some family time, and my middle kid has a ball game on Monday evening.

Frank, that's so touching.

Jty - happy birthday to your little man!!! Congrats on finishing a semester too. That's a great accomplishment.

We usually just relax and take it easy on the long weekend. In years past, we've gone to parties/BBQ's/family outings but since 9/11, I can honestly say that Memorial Day has taken on a more prominent meaning. I like to reflect and spend some quiet time with my guys. Running around hollering and giggling seems kind of unseemly to me in a time of war.

A few years ago, we attended the opening of the new WWII Memorial in D.C. on Memorial Day weekend. Very touching and I don't think a word was spoken for the entire car trip home. Lots of kleenexes that day.
I can see November 2 from my house!!!

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I too pray for our nation everyday.  I usually get a great sense of peace after such a prayer.  I don't think the Almighty has given up on us yet.

Very touching Frank.

For myself, no plans for this weekend really.  I might go to my brother's house and visit with the two monkey/nephews.*

Really, if I put my mind to it I invision some yard work and house cleaning.

* Okay, I just asked my SIL what their plans are for this weekend and she said she's started her contractions so I might be getting a new nephew this weekend. :)

Good morning, all.

I went for my first early morning run this morning. It was nice. There wasn't another soul around. It was just me listening to my breathing and foot fall. It rained all night here and is supposed to most of the day. It was chilly enough this morning that I actually had to dig out my jacket from the closet!

TOTD: I'm going to a family BBQ tomorrow. My only other plans are to train for my race and rest.
