A Russian nuclear-powered attack submarine armed with long-range cruise missiles operated undetected in the Gulf of Mexico for several weeks and its travel in strategic U.S. waters was only confirmed after it left the region, the Washington Free Beacon has learned.

It is only the second time since 2009 that a Russian attack submarine has patrolled so close to U.S. shores.

The stealth underwater incursion in the Gulf took place at the same time Russian strategic bombers made incursions into restricted U.S. airspace near Alaska and California in June and July, and highlights a growing military assertiveness by Moscow.

The submarine patrol also exposed what U.S. officials said were deficiencies in U.S. anti-submarine warfare capabilities—forces that are facing cuts under the Obama administration’s plan to reduce defense spending by $487 billion over the next 10 years.

The Navy is in charge of detecting submarines, especially those that sail near U.S. nuclear missile submarines, and uses undersea sensors and satellites to locate and track them.

The fact that the Akula was not detected in the Gulf is cause for concern, U.S. officials said.

The officials who are familiar with reports of the submarine patrol in the Gulf of Mexico said the vessel was a nuclear-powered Akula-class attack submarine, one of Russia’s quietest submarines.

A Navy spokeswoman declined to comment.

One official said the Akula operated without being detected for a month.

“The Akula was built for one reason and one reason only: To kill U.S. Navy ballistic missile submarines and their crews,” said a second U.S. official.

Captain Ramius: We will pass through the American patrols, past their sonar nets, and lay off their largest city, and listen to their rock and roll... while we conduct missile drills.

Maybe it started the gulf oil spill.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Meanwhile we've got a CINC that thinks we need to reduce our military strength.

  • Where are you going? I was gonna make espresso!
Frankly, I'm not horribly worried.  Now if they pop up off Kings Bay or in the Straits of Juan de Fuca, I might be concerned.

And I love how the "officials" aren't named, nor are their credentials known.

Something here begs for a question..

If not detected, how could it be confirmed?
Just seems odd to me.

Where's that doofus...John Matrix to tell us all how we're over reacting to this?

First thought is that we knew about it and did nothing.

Hence the officials that released this did so without accreditation.

Well when you cut our nuke subs to less then 50 for all the world to patrol shit like this is going to happen.
"You cannot legislate the poor into freedom by legislating the wealthy out of freedom. What one person receives without working for, another person must work for without receiving. The government cannot give to anybody anything that the government does not first take from somebody else. When half of the people get the idea that they do not have to work because the other half is going to take care of them, and when the other half gets the idea that it does no good to work because somebody else is going to get what they work for, that my dear friend, is about the end of any nation. You cannot multiply wealth by dividing it."

Now as to whether or not we had someone tracking the boat is one thing, I agree.  But to totally be unaware of its presence?

Sorry, we have far too many assets and tools at our disposal to NOT know it's at least in the vicinity of the Gulf.  Down to a gnat's ass would take one of our SSN's trailing it, but that's not even entirely necessary.

Anyone who spent some time in Pearl and who rode out to Ford Island knows of which I speak.

Hell, anybody who's paid attention as they read a Tom Clancy novel - before he started phoning 'em in, anyway - may not have the same degree of understanding of the group of which you speak, but they should have sufficient for their level of "need to know".

Basically, the SOSUS line has been pretty much common knowledge for at least 30 years.  Not going into specifics, but it's in the ocean, it's pretty much common knowledge of what it is and where it came from.

Even so, the capabilities of a fairly modern passive sonar system have to be experienced to be believed.  The general public can hear the stories, read the articles, and do everything but be shown the actual technical specifications, and they still won't understand, because they haven't heard what kind of data the passive sonar can do with their own ears.

My one experience with it was an awe inspiring one.

Even if you DO show them the specs (not happening) they won't understand.

And yeah, I still call BS.

Joel Kennedy over at The Stupid Shall Be Punished sums it up pretty well:

I'd wager the ASW boys have now got a sound signature of that boat, that would amaze everyone except DSix. :-)

It would amaze me.  No question about it.  I have a fair idea of what they can do, and it would still amaze me.
