I'm curious....
« on: August 12, 2012, 04:55:11 PM »
Has anybody here been called and polled for your opinion on who you will vote for, or anything else regarding this election?

I want to know who all these people are that are being polled and what time of day/week are they being called. Particularly the ones that are bumping Obama up in the polls.

I haven't been called in years. We had a block on our land line when we had two lines, now we only have one and the fax machine is hooked up to it. But there are 3 adults in this house, all with cell phones, none have a block on them. None of us have been called and we are registered Republicans. As far as I know, cell phone #'s are available based on the number of "junk" calls we all get.

Who are all these people being called for all the different polls?

Does anyone know how they are picked?

I've only been polled once and that was many years ago. I'd love to know who Gallup and Rasmussen actually do call, and since more and more people are using their cellphones in their home how do the polling companies adjust for that?

Probably, but I didn't answer.  I've seen caller ID's that were most likely pollsters, but that's not enough to get me to answer.

I get calls on my office phone because it's a land line, but they're always robocalls and never pollsters.  It's usually in the afternoon.

I don't know either, that's why I asked.

And are these people a true cross-section of a community/area/whatever, or do the pollsters' just decide - well today, I'm going to make 5 calls to 121st St in Chicago, and 12th in Atlanta, and Elm Ave in San Fran. etc. And use those results to be the "opinion of the country" or whatever group is being targeted that day?

How many of the people are stay at home because they are retired, on SSI or some type of welfare? Because any one of those people are going to have specific needs/wants from the government, whether it be their SS money because they are retired and have Medicare benefits ( which is applicable in my household) or because they are getting disability, or food stamps, or SSI for their kid, or some type of income from the government.

How many don't work for whatever reason? A stay at home mom/dad - who is home by choice - is probaby going to have a different opinion that a mom/dad who has lost their job and collecting unemployment, or even moreso, one who's unemployment benefits have expired.

We don't have a land line any more, but even then I don't think any pollsters called.  I have answered the phone at work several times right in a row, that I think were from pollsters.  (My work place has several numbers that are sequential.)

We got robocalls from David Dewhurst more than once a day nil the runoff election.

This race, nothing.

The GOP did call us a few months ago, and did a general survey.

I got one too. I used to contribute to campaigns (and the RNC); but the Obama economy hasn't done me any favors...so I cannot afford to contribute this year.

Once you donate to someone's campaign, you're stuck with them.  It's like herpes.

I give money to the candidate directly.  I still get stuff in the mail from Christine O'Donnell.

I have never given any to any candidate either.  If I want to support a candidate, I will do it with my time. I think they must have gotten my info from primaries I have voted in.

I have never donated to a political campaign, until Scott Walker.  But I was bugged way before then with constant mailings from McCain and now Romney.  They must really want my $5.

Here's how Rasmussen describes their methodology:

Quote
All Rasmussen Reports' survey questions are digitally recorded and fed to a calling program that determines question order, branching options, and other factors. Calls are placed to randomly-selected phone numbers through a process that insures appropriate geographic representation. Typically, calls are placed from 5 pm to 9 pm local time during the week. Saturday calls are made from 11 am to 6 pm local time and Sunday calls from 1 pm to 9 pm local time.

To reach those who have abandoned traditional landline telephones, Rasmussen Reports uses an online survey tool to interview randomly selected participants from  a demographically diverse panel.

After the surveys are completed, the raw data is processed through a weighting program to insure that the sample reflects the overall population in terms of age, race, gender, political party, and other factors

I was reading an interview with Artur Davis (former Dem congressman who switched to R), in the Limbaugh Letter.  He said that conservatives are always underpolled, because they're simply not at home during those times.  Or, if they're home, they're having dinner with their family and won't interupt it for a phone call.
