primitives discuss what's for Sunday dinner

Oh my.

Skins's island is pretty boring today, after all the euphoria of yesterday.

A hangover's what happens when one drinks too much.

Too bad for the primitives.

What's for Dinner ~ Sunday August 12th

Quote
Laurian (321 posts)

1. Pork tenderloin cooked on the grill.

Baked cheese grits, green beans and corn fresh from the farmers market, salad and rolls. Vanilla cupcakes and ice cream for dessert. (Dessert was chosen with the grand kids in mind.)

3. Please tell me more about the baked cheese grits. I love cheese and grits.

Quote
Laurian (321 posts)

6. Baked cheese grits are easy and quite versatile.

I don't really use a recipe anymore, i just improvise. I make grits according to directions using one cup of grits. Once the grits are cooked, I add a little whole milk or cream, a little cream cheese if I have it on hand, about 8 oz of cheese (I've used cheddar, jack, smoked gouda. Today, I'm going to try a combo of smoked provolone and parmesan.). Mix it all together, add a beaten egg (tempered with a little of the grits to avoid scrambling the egg) and season to taste with black pepper, salt if needed. Pour into a buttered casserole dish and bake at 350 until hot and bubbly, usually about half an hour.

My son absolutely loves them and will keep coming back to the leftovers until they are gone!

9. Growing up, a "starch" was a major component of every dinner.

It was always potatoes, rice or pasta. When I moved south, I learned to appreciate grits as a new ingredient that I could use to round out a meal. I keep thinking I want to give quinoa a try, but haven't done so yet. It's really hard for me to break away from standard fare and think of new possibilities.

Quote
cbayer (109,854 posts)

10. I grew up the same way and still tend to have a starch.

Rice is my favorite, but I have used grits for a number of things. I particularly like it with gravy based dishes (grillades and grits!). I've also used slices of premade polenta.

I have tried several times to use quinoa and I just don't like it. It's too tough and has no taste, imo.

Quote
Phentex (6,791 posts)

11. I try to flavor the quinoa as much as possible but prefer it in a blend of rice. I really like a little onion, garlic and sundried tomatoes mixed in and I don't mind it plain. But it's never something I'd rave about, lol.

I'm used to a starch but we have cut way back so I'll take the quinoa over nuttin!

Quote
cbayer (109,854 posts)

15. I've tried it several different ways.

Reminds me of my brief affair with macrobiotics, a relationship I would just as soon forget.

2. I was actually able to get HIM to make quesadillas last night.

I wished I had filmed it, though. It was hilarious, including one scene of the steak sliding out of the oven onto the floor.

Anyway, they were good and he learned alot.

Tonight, I am going to do something with the rest of that steak. I am thinking stroganoff.

7. Soy dogs, macaroni salad and corn on the cob

Feeling like a picnic but it is cold (for August) and raining here today.

12. Something on the grill...going to Costco in a while...

and I'll see what looks good.

13. We are dining out tonight at Il Sorriso, a beautiful waterfront dining establishment specializing in Italian food. Celebrating 33 years of marriage!

14. Breaded pork tenderloin sandwiches.

found a deal on 100% natural pork tenderloin for $1.99/lb at my local market.

I dunno.

It's about 3:00 p.m. central time right now, and all franksolich has had are four mugs of coffee today thus far.

I imagine pretty soon I'll go into town and buy an apple at the convenience store there, for dinner; that'll suit.

Sunday at the Tots house is "Grill for the week" day.  Tonight, there will be a big sirloin steak, and smoked sausage.  That, with the leftover pulled pork bbq from the crockpot last night means I don't have to cook all week, aside from reheating.

I was going to make a pork roast with mashed potatoes and gravy, can you believe I couldn't find a pork roast at all, ended up getting a pot roast.

There's another campfire in the cooking and baking forum, where the primitives discuss making borscht.

I thought about bringing that over, but sort of got sick to the stomach.

When I was in the socialist paradises of the workers and peasants, borscht was ubiquitous, all over the place, always on the table.

I used to take my spoon and gingerly tipped it near the edge of bowl, so only the liquid, and never the solid matter, would seep in.

I picked up some chuck eye steaks to break up the monotony of curry-roasted chicken.

My brother made these great-looking spareribs.  For some reason, they're just sitting in the refrigerator uneaten.

BBQ seasoned Chicken quarters were on sale. Going to grill those with some grilled yellow squash, mushrooms, and onions -- all organic in the sense that they were at one time on a farm somewhere.

Might have to make some buttered egg noodles for the twins.

It's a totally boring thread, I thought for some reason it would be interesting.

Yeah, that's a big concern of mine, because the cooking and baking primitives, who used to provide the DUmpster with much amusing material, don't put out like they used to.

Sweet, good-hearted Lu does her best to keep that forum going, but it's not working.

When Mrs. Alfred Packer, the hippywife primitive, was leading it, it popped like popcorn.

And perhaps that's the problem--Lu is just too good, too kind, too sweet, too indulgent, for the primitives; they seem to prefer the nasty spiteful intolerant leadership of the now-gone Mrs. Alfred Packer.

Kindness and genteelity isn't anything that attracts on Skins's island; only Hate and bile and bilge.

Oh my no.

The cooking and baking primitives have really epicurean tastes, exclusive tastes, decadent tastes.

Its as if people who care (as so the primitives allege themselves to) aren't aware there's hundreds of millions of brown people, black people, and yellow people in the world starving.

They got their fancy foods; they don't care that many need bread.

Steak (filet mignon), sauteed mushrooms, bake potato, salad and bread.

My daughter is leaving tomorrow for college so this is her going away dinner. My husband and son are going to drive her (in her car) and fly back. She is going to school in Florida, 20 hour drive. :(

We went to a baby shower this afternoon, stopped at Kroger's on way home. Me to get some OTC allergy pills and migraine headache pills and the guys to hit the deli and see what they wanted to eat tonight. One got meatloaf and the other got prime rib...

I wasn't hungry and I have to go in to work at 9 until 4, so will grab something to eat at work when I go on break at 1. It's looking like yogurt to take and a Snickers bar from the snack shelf at work. My kind of health food .... forget that soy dog crap!!!  :-)
Just hand over the chocolate...back away slowly...far away....and you won't get hurt....

Went to a Mexican restaurant with friends after we saw Ted. I paid less for a huge plate of enchiladas than it would have cost to get a large popcorn and a drink.

Made thick pork chops with gravy and mashed potatoes last night tho. I wish there were left overs tonight.

W560.1A and W560.1B were impressed with the chicken as well.

They're so pretentious it's comical. They're lucky nutcase nadin doesn't cook.

The DUmmies should be about out of food stamps by this time of the month. They eat really well the first two weeks, then complain how they are "too poor for food" the rest of the month.

After you have to trade part of your EBT benefits for pre paid cell phone cards for all your kids that really dips into the monthly food budget. Hopefully they can split up and hit a few food pantries.  :-)

Check out the video.  It seems "free phones" are easy to come by for Obama's Food Stamp nation.
