Before their wedding ceremony begins in rural Afghanistan, a 40-year-old man sits to be photographed with his 11-year-old bride. The girl tells the photographer that she is sad to be engaged because she had hoped to become a teacher. Her favorite class was Dari, the local language, before she had to leave her studies to get married.

She is one of the 51 million child brides around the world today. And it's not just Muslims; it happens across many cultures and regions.

Photographer Stephanie Sinclair has traveled the world taking pictures, like the one of the Afghan couple, to document the phenomenon. Christiane Amanpour spoke with Sinclair about a book which features her photographs called, "Questions without Answers: The World in Pictures by the Photographers of VII."

Amanpour asked Sinclair if the 11-year-old Afghan girl married in 2005, and others like her, consummate their marriages at such an early age. Sinclair says while many Afghans told her the men would wait until puberty, women pulled her aside to tell her that indeed the men do have sex with the prepubescent brides.

India and Japan have been in the news for decades, if not centuries, for arranges marriages. I don't recall Afghanistan being in the news 20/30 years ago for anything other than the USSR pullout.

Yes it was. He was the leader of the Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints and yes polygamy and sending your underage daughters off to marry 50 year old men is the accepted norm. Even with him in prison he is still running the place. IE Colorado City, Hilldale and the compound in Texas that the UEP is running.

Before we all get our panties in a twist over these over seas people following tradition for a few thousand years, we need to pay attention to AprilRazz.

She is most correct and right on the spot, we in America allow these things to go on under the call for respect of others traditions.

Occasionally we do get a Warren Jeff's in jail but this seems to make his followers even stronger. Nothing makes a faith or tradition stronger then adversity.

Each time a Muslim is jailed for killing a daughter or wife for some reason, the Muslim comunity gets stronger, pulls together to protect their traditions from outsiders.

Quite a problem for us in how to handle all these new Americans.
