Hoo boy... American Exceptionalism (and class)
I have been wondering for a while why the US did not get a sense of class identity... and I think I have come up with one answer to this, and not a nice one. American Exceptionalism, which takes on religious overtones for the far right... is part of the answer... per usual it is NOT the only answer by the way.
So far, the only primitive who's been at this campfire's the skidmarked underwear primitive, the disconsolate older farmwife from eastern Iowa, who's perpetually unhappy because the world doesn't work out the way she thinks it should:

1. I think you are on target.
I have gotten into some glorious arguments with trying to further the notion that not one American life is any more valuable or meaningful than the life of any other inhabitant of this earth and that our collective needs as a people are not any more critical than any other peoples.
But...but...but....we are chosen to be the Guardians of the Flame...

2. You want a good book on this
fair warning, it is far right Strauss student... going through it right now. Let me know,
Now remember, "American exceptionalism" is one of nadin's
bete noires, because when her grandparents and father, then a little lad, tried to get out of Poland back in 1939, the
Democrat president, the
Democrat Congress, the
Democrat Supreme Court, and the
Democrat Department of State, were unsympathetic to their plight, and so they ended up in Mexico instead.
Her contempt for America however doesn't keep nadin from grabbing all she can get from us.
