My neighbor, a little ways up the road from me, was a member of the shake down crew and first crew to serve on the USS Forestal. He's in his 70's now and dying of lung cancer.

What do you call the first crew, "Plank members" or something?

Yep Plank Owners.  I will never forget the Damage Control guy I met who was just coming off the Firestall.  He said he was one busy buckaroo on that boat fighting fires.  His best story was not being able to find a chow hall when he first reported until he spotted a rather rotund guy and followed him.  The year was 1970 and we were both waiting for orders in Newport, RI.

She actually back from deployment now, returning in July, and is schedueled for decomissioning in December of this year.
