Sunday morning surprise, with UPDATE!
« on: July 29, 2012, 02:20:27 PM »
I got up this morning and made me some coffee just like every morning. Grabbed my coffee and went over to let my Yorkie out of the crate he sleeps in so he could go to the bathroom. I slid open the patio door leading to the back yard so the dog could go out and then I stepped out......right into a swarm of bees! Holy shit! they were everywhere and they were not happy that I had stumbled into their midst.

I stumbled around and managed to get back inside without getting stung and I closed the door. Is was at that point I realized that I had left my dog outside. I looked outside and the bees were swarming and the dog was running. I opened the door just enough to let him in and then closed it again. I didn't get stung and neither did the dog and no bees got into the house.

I called the emergency maintenance hot line and reported a swarm of bees. The maintenance guys responded in less than 10 minutes. They sprayed the swarm with some kind of killer bee juice and they began dropping like fly's. They have to respray in three hours.....emergency over and everyone is safe.

UPDATE! UPDATE! Well. My phone rang a little while ago and it was the property manager wanting to know what the hell was going on. So I told her the story. Come to find out the maintenance man did not spray anything, I misunderstood what he said. What he meant to tell me was that he would contact the property manager and she would get back to me in less than three hours, which she did. She said she looked at the patio and there were just a few bees. I said how long ago was that and she said well it's been awhile. I said well I am right now as we speak looking out the patio door.

I didn't count them but I would estimate their numbers at over 5000. By my definition that constitutes a swarm and represents a hazard to me my dog and anyone who happens by..and considering that there are Africanized bees all over Arizona I am not willing to take a chance and I want these bees removed NOW. She agreed, somehow I knew she would. She called the super dooper bee removal people and they will be out shortly to deal with the problem, I hope.Film at 11:00.

So that's what all the buzz was about this morning . . .

Seriously, good thing you and your dog are alright.  Our Siberian Husky, when I was young, dug into a yellow jackets' nest.  They got him pretty good.  As we were driving the ten miles or so to the vet's, I was in the back of the VW Squareback wagon killing the things as they came out of his fur.  Must have killed 20 to 30 of the things back there, after we had thoroughly hosed him down before we put him into the car.  He came rather close to dying that day.   For some strange reason, he never tried to dig at the base of a tree after that. :???: O-)

FINAL REPORT! FINAL REPORT!

THEY BEE GONE! A MOMENT OF SILENCE PLEASE...OK THAT'S LONG ENOUGH.

Well fellow bee lovers the pest control man showed up and I filled him in on what had been going on all day. He says I'll try to figure out where they are coming from.Soon he knocks on the door and asks me about an old piece of exercise equipment that is sitting on the patio. I told him it was junk and really needed to be hauled away. He says they are building a hive in the frame of the equipment, well there you go. The bees were swarming and decided to set up residence in that old piece of equipment. Unfortunately for the bees I am already living here, their demise was imminent.

The pest control guy has a tank full of agent orange for bees strapped to his back and in about five minutes it's all over. The dead and dying are everywhere, they never stood a chance. So here we are, a little clean up tomorrow and we will be able to close the lid on another chapter in the continuing adventures of Bondai and Milo the wonder dog. Be sure you don't miss next weeks adventure. I know you will enjoy it as much as we enjoy bringing it to you. :cheersmate:

My sister has had some problems with them in Tucson. No damage, though, no stings. Anything can set them off - even the noise of a lawn mower in the vicinity.

The fire department will close down intersections when the bee control guys are doing their thing.

They have managed to spread all over Arizona and under the right circumstances they can be lethal. They are short tempered and it doesn't take much to set them off. As you stated even the sound of a lawn mower is enough to provoke an attack. There are several things that make them far more dangerous than their native counterparts. Their defensive instincts are easily aroused and when they attack they do it in force and often pursue a threat over long distances. If you are unlucky enough to be the victim of one these attacks you may find yourself fighting for your very life.

According to reports from police and rescue agencies you can expect to be overwhelmed by thousands of angry bees. They sting you everywhere they can including your head, face, the inside of your nose, mouth and ears. They are in full attack mode and you are the target. The pain can be unbearable and victims often pass out. If you are one of the countless Americans that are allergic to bee stings the odds are that you will not survive the attack and this is true for the elderly and young children as well.

If you are not allergic ,and in good enough health and can get to a hospital your chances of survival are good. However the treatment and recovery is not going to be any fun. There are going to be thousands of bee stingers embedded in your skin and they have to be removed, one at at a time.Every sting spot is going to be inflamed, swollen, itchy and succeptable to infection. The next few weeks are not going to be fun.Attack survivors have reported that the attack was the most painful and terrifying thing that has ever happened to them. Many carry the emotional scars for years.

Yesterday when I had the bee problem is was implied by the property manager that I was overeacting and that no real danger existed. It is not easy to tell the difference between an Africanized bee and it's domestic cousin. It takes an expert to make the determination and I am no expert. Knowing that I am going to err on the side of caution. I am not going to go out into a swarm of bees and try to find out if they are Africanized or not.I told the property manager that if she wanted to come over and handle the situation then she was more than welcome to do so. Common sense won out and she declined of course, and we know the rest of the story. The pest control man showed up and that was the end of.

She must be a LIBERAL. Why else would she volunteer me to do something that is extremely stupid and potentially lethal when she is not prepared to do it herself. It's the same thing when LIBERALS pass stupid and restrictive laws and then inform the rest of us that the laws don't apply to them. I read somewhere that an example of LIBERAL generosity is that they are willing to give you the shirt off of someone else,s back. How true is that.
