So you all don't care what you use for hunting, just so it shoots? I can see some of your points, and they are some good ones. I just find it odd that someone would use a ak47 to hunt deer. I guess that is just me.

Edited to add missing words.. This stupid keyboard.
OK, I will bite.
I hunt whitetail in Virginia with an AK. With a slight tweak on the sights it is just as accurate as an AR or any hunting rifle at the ranges that you would encounter a deer. The heavier round in the AK 7.62x39 makes going through brush better than the .223 or 5.56 as it does not deflect like the lighter rounds do. It is also much lighter and I can carry it for longer periods (I am a 125lb female). There is no difference in the AK-47 or the Savage or Ruger (sold as a hunting rifles). But the latter two are heavier. Nothing over a 5 round magazine is permitted in this state so no 100 round drum mags here.
The meat loss is minimal with a decent shot.

I am telling you this as a hunter as well as someone who is trained to also treat gun shot wounds.

There was a well known old man here that claimed he hunted quail with a .22 rifle. Some of his buddies asked him how he did it.

Old hunter, "Well, you know how when you first flush them and they take flight, they shit".

Buddies, "Yeah but what's that got to do with shooting quail on the wing with a .22 rifle."

Old hunter, "Well, right after they shit, they look back at whatever flushed them".

Buddies, "So what."

Old hunter, "Well, that's what makes shooting them with a rifle so easy. When they look back at you, you shoot them between the eyes."

No kidding, that old hunter was a hellava quail hunter with a shotgun. He used an old 12 ga. single barrel and could 2 and sometime 3 shots off on a covey rise. ...and he always got more than 2 quail on a covey rise. And a single didn't stand a chance against him.

I wonder if they would change their tunes if guns were banned, and armed criminals ran rampant.

Whine and cry, "Where are all the people to protect me?"

I doubt it.

IIRC, in England the cops don't usually carry guns.  Would the DUmmies expect that to happen here?

My thoughts is not to repeal the 2nd amendment, I am a stout believer of the 2nd. But name a time that you need to use an ak47 to go hunting?

Feral hogs...just to name one.  The round works perfectly and its one shot and done.  It kinda seems like you don't know excressence (as our esteemed Coach would say) about firearms so maybe you should stop with the foolish "target shooting and gun shows" crap before you make yourself sound even more clueless.  Gun shows are for buying, selling and trading with maybe only one or two people displaying their guns only for people to view.

I've taken a feral hog with an AK, SKS, M44 Mosin Nagant, K98 Mauser, M1 Garand and my 03A3 Springfield.  Which of those do you find acceptable or appropriate to hunt with?  Still have a few more surplus rifles I'd like to take down a hog with...maybe when it cools off a little.

Feral hogs are starting to show up in the Adirondacks, and I've heard of them being over by Carl's neck of the woods. NYS DEC wants the things gone.  All one needs is a small-game liscence and something to shoot them with.  No bag limits.  An AK would be good for those, but I'd want a Colt LE-901, myself.  An AR in .308 Winchester.

They're an on-again, off-again problem here, you can basically shoot them anywhere you can legally fire a gun, no license required, except for a time-out in deer season.

I think that the NYS DEC might not have the 'deer season time-out' for feral hogs. :-)

In any event, my father told me about a month ago that, due to his advancing age (71), he's getting recoil-sensitive, and he wants to use a Redhawk .44 Magnum as his primary deer weapon.  I told him that he could get a .243 Winchester, or even use his 94 in .30 WCF.  He said nooooo, he wants to use the Redhawk (which I think was the purpose all along).  Seeing that another one of the deer camp members has developed cancer (Stage IV lung, and he hasn't smoked in almost 30 years), there just may be a bed for my dad this year.

You guys have some great reasons to use an AK47 for hunting. I never thought of any of them. Good Job, everyone.  :cheersmate:

Getting back to the 'control the wild hogs' reason, they tend to travel in groups.  If, for some strange reason, you don't nail the biggest boar with the first shot (but instead get one of his sows), he may decide to ruin your day at that time.

I don't think that would make for a very pleasant experience. Wow.

That's why you should only hunt them from helicopters, like real tracker/hunters do.

I still say that banning guns would have the same effect as what happened when alcohol was banned ninety years ago.

Ban guns, and everybody and his uncle and his dog and cat will want, and get, a gun.

And the market would be controlled, as that in alcohol had been, by undesirable elements rather than respectable law-abiding people and enterprises.....and coindentially, difficult to regulate and tax.

We all know how the primitives love regulations and taxes.

And a lot of those will be fully automatic.  Bet on it.

Unintended consequences, DUllards.  Unintended consequences.
