We were coming out of the store about 1 P.M. yesterday. As Marta was getting into the car, the car on her side was getting out of theirs. Marta noticed there was a sheltie in the back seat. The two young ladies closed the doors, windows up. The temp was in the 90's. There were no clouds in the sky for any shade at that time. The heat index was around 110.

Marta asked the driver to please roll down the windows a little to vent the car and allow heat to leave the vehicle. The passenger said "we probably should".

The driver said "we will only be in there a couple of minutes". Marta again asked the driver to please consider the dog, and roll down the window just a little. The driver then said to her " please don't put your judgement on me mam".

I then said I had read this week that a dog left in the car in this kind of heat can die in 15 minutes time. The two headed into the store.

I called 911 and told them about the situation. It is a felony. A car arrived in 3 minutes time. I told the officer what happened. He said that the Nebraska Humane Society has to observe the act unless the dog is visibly distressed. They were on the way.

After 15 minutes the two young ladies came out of the store with only a 24 pack of beer. The officer approached them as they walked toward the car. He asked for their IDs. The cop let them off with a verbal warning and putting their info in a report for future reference.

We hope they did in fact learn from the experience.

We would do it again without a second thought.

Well, it brought a tear to my eye. I don't know how the voters could have rejected such a heroic man (well actually it was the dour Marta that approached these "dangerous" girls). But, apparently the ever prepared OS had his trusty wet bulb thermometer with him to record the heat index. What a guy.

I think it was a good deed to report this.  The question I have is: Why is it every single time a DUmmy does a deed that some would consider a good deed they must post about it?  Are they seeking validation?

Can they not simply perform an act of kindness for the act itself?  Must there be boasting?

What bothers me is that liberals like Marta and Omaha Steve are comfortable using the threat of law enforcement before any act of wrongdoing is committed.  The officer said the NHS must observe the dog in a state of distress... it was not. Second, it is hardly a felony.  It's a $200 fine in the city of Omaha.

(1) A person who intentionally, knowingly, or recklessly abandons or cruelly neglects an animal is guilty of a Class I misdemeanor unless the abandonment or cruel neglect results in serious injury or illness or death of the animal, in which case it is a Class IV felony.

(2)(a) Except as provided in subdivision (b) of this subsection, a person who cruelly mistreats an animal is guilty of a Class I misdemeanor for the first offense and a Class IV felony for any subsequent offense.

Steve was only hanging around hoping to snag some of the meat for his mini-tacos.

Wow and this whole time Steve was ready to punce on two young women and take them down at a moments notice.  Oh wait he didn't that was his wife and the cops. As it is it's been hot but not so hot that the short time it took those ladies to get in and out of the store caused any harm and that is a good thing. It sounds like they were at a convienance store  which ironically is called Kwik Shop and their is one in OS's Distric were he ran for office on Mission Street. There are others in Bellevue but from reading OS's post you would thing he only shops where he lives.

Reminds of my husband leaving our dog in his vehicle parked in front of the Officer's Club in Florida while he ran in to pick up dinner to go (I was back home visiting family).    Some tough guy came in all in everyone's face about it and how he was going to have them locked up.

My pampered pooch was sitting in a vehicle running with the air conditioner on - my husband had just taken her for a walk on the beach.    He was picking up a 2 for 1 prime rib.  One dinner had all the side dishes, the other was just the meat - for my pampered pooch.  

You have to really be a certain kind of stupid to not notice the car was running.
