Michael Salman was found guilty in the City of Phoenix Court of 67 code violations.

The controversy erupted in 2009 when nearly a dozen police officers raided the Salman’s home and a 2,000 square foot building in their backyard. The family had moved their Bible study into the building after the group outgrew their living room.

This has been discussed here before.  He was arrested for code violations related to running an unlicensed church.  I see they convicted him, so a jury of his peers or a judge must have felt he was guilty based on the evidence.

Yeah...on the facts, what he was jailed for was a lot more like 'Creating a public nuisance' and 'Contempt of court' than it was for Bible study.  The result would have been the same if he was hosting swingers' parties or a giant D&D game every week.

Do you think the law is enforced equally for those groups? Or an LBGT-whatever meeting? Would they have done this to a Moslem "Imam"?

Twelve cops for this? I think we should ask ourselves the question: what has changed since 2009, as this was a "long-running" battle, to precipitate this sudden and it-sure-looks-like-to-me overreaction?

Greg Stanton claims victory over Wes Gullett in Phoenix election

Greg Stanton launched his candidacy for Phoenix mayor in December, surrounded by supporters in a restored, historic warehouse downtown. Thousands of handshakes, 50 debates and 11 months later, Stanton's journey ended Tuesday at the same place he started - this time celebrating victory.

A dot possibly worthy of connection:

Quote
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton's aides and a group of attorneys are working to draft ordinances that could outlaw discrimination against gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender residents.

The aides and attorneys believe that if rewritten, city laws would also give victims of such discrimination in restaurants and other businesses an opportunity to file complaints with the city's Equal Opportunity Department for investigation -- an option they currently do not have.

Mayors for the Freedom to Marry Statement:

As mayors of great American cities, we proudly stand together in support of the freedom of same-sex couples to marry. We personally know many gay and lesbian people living in our cities who are in committed, loving relationships, who are active participants in the civic life of our communities, and who deserve to be able to marry the person with whom they share their life.

Sorry that these are hypergay-lifestyle sites, but it's info, and in some ways better out of their own mouths. I'd bet money Salman and his group are being targeted because of their views on homosexuality generally and gay marriage particularly. I'd give 4 to 1 odds, happily. Hey, maybe I can start a betting pool in my neighborhood!::running to door with book::

That would probably depend on how much their neighbors complained about the nuisance, which was apparently a whole lot with this guy.

“Any other occupancy or use – business, commercial, assembly, church, etc. is expressly prohibited pursuant to the city of Phoenix building code and ordinances,” said Vicki Hill, the chief assistant city prosecutor.
The irony of that rule was not lost on Salman.

The Salman Family
“If I had people coming to my home on a regular basis for poker night or Monday Night Football, it would be permitted,” he said. “But when someone says to us we are not allowed to gather because of religious purposes ...

The charges that sent Salman to jail were a result of that raid – ranging from not posting exit lights above their doors – to not having handicap ramps or handicap parking.

He was sent to jail specifically for have a religious meeting that the city decided to label a church.  He could have had the same number of people for any other reason and it would not have been a problem.  It was only a problem because it was religious in nature.

And as I recall the original story, one neighbor complained, the rest of the neighborhood had no problem with it.

Beleive whatever you want, as for me I expect there's more to it than just the Mr. Salman's version of the facts most favorable to him.  It sounds like there were a hundred ways for him to avoid the outcome, but he decided to take it where it went for his own purposes.

How many times are you going to post the same story?

Michael Salman is serving a 60-day sentence in Maricopa County's notorious Tent City jail for allegedly violating his probation by holding religious services on his property in violation of zoning and building codes. He was arrested July 9, after authorities charged the one-time gang member hosted Bible sessions for as many 80 people on his 4-acre property, which he tried to claim as a tax-exempt church.

I didn't see it. It was a recent article from FOX News.
