Pa. mayor cuts city workers' pay to minimum wage

SCRANTON, Pa. (AP) — Unions representing workers in the northeastern Pennsylvania city of Scranton expect to file a federal lawsuit against the city after the mayor abruptly cut their pay to minimum wage.

The attorney for three unions, including firefighters and police, tells The Times-Tribune of Scranton (http://bit.ly/LEtMXt ) he expects to file several legal actions, including a motion to hold Mayor Chris Doherty in contempt of court for violating a judge's order to pay full wages.

Doherty last week cut the pay for about 400 employees to the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. He says it was the only way for the cash-strapped city to pay bills, and promises to restore pay once finances are stabilized.

Doherty is locked in a dispute with Scranton's city council over a financial recovery plan as it faces a $16.8 million budget deficit.

He's defying a court order to pay their full salaries.  It seems like lots of DemonRats like to defy court orders.

However, this could just be a ploy to get people to agree to tax increases in the city.

You can fire people until you can meet payroll down until there is only one firetruck and three part-time cops, but you can't just unilaterally change contracts like this without filing bankruptcy first (And even then, it still isn't unilateral).  It's a pretty direct violation of the Fifth Amendment prohibition against taking without due process of law.

Yeah, what he should have done is lay people off and cut some things, other than their pay. The thing with the whole situation is that he had to do something, and from what I gather tried to ratify it without having anyone lose their jobs. He did say that he will reinstate the pays when they get the deficit taken care of. I am sure they will probably raise the taxes there as well.

Maybe he should have asked Joe Biden about it, after all that is where Crazy Joe is from.

So one works 25 years on a road crew that works in the heat of the summer laying tar.  15 years hanging off wires to rebuild bridges  or mucking up and down the sewers to keep things moving.

After all these years these workers should be experts in whatever.   Now they are told their expertise is worth the same pay as a new hire at a fast food joint ?????

Why not change jobs, move the experts to the fast food business and remove the workers of the same to work at their old jobs.    Hang a few off a bridge on wires, put a few into the sewers and put the rest into the 90 degree heat to rebuild the roads.  Oh when a problem comes about with wires down from a storm, send in half a dozen managers of fast food chains to fix it.

Didn't Obama violate with the GM bailout, when he gave a lot to the unions and shut the legitimate bondholders out?

I think so, but it depends on the bondholders to do anything about it (Also the contractual terms of the bonds, natch), and I believe the bondholders who got screwed were large institutional investors who are either highly adverse to suing over it, or figure they will be money ahead to use it as a tax loss vs. trying to enforce their rights.

You Sir have a problem with understanding satire from fact.  Then there is no imagination of just how crazy this world can and has become.

KYLE, how ever old you are, things have Changed from the time you were a kid.   We have convicted child molesters living next door to us.    We have 11 year old kids on the streets with guns in Minnie packs of gangs.

Nothing is imposable in today's world.    Great grandmas brewing up  Meth in the kitchen, the Highscool Principal selling drugs, in the news every day somewhere.

Chill out, unless you live in a commune that tries to protect you from the world----------Yes there are people who with good thoughts want to help others.--------------Then the Sandusky and the problems with the Ministers and Priests.    I am sure they wanted to help others until their own needs came in and they gave in to them.----Now enter the Dragon Evil with a list of excuses people could make.

Where was that satirical? You basically went off a tangent agreeing with the people who are suing him. So basically, you took the sides of the unions. Do you do that much?

I'm not saying that I agree with what he did. But I also won't agree with the Unions, as it is probably their fault that the city is that far in debt.

lol. I find the sig funny because the man is standing wrong, and wearing golf gloves to hold the pick. We all know he took a small break from the 9th hole to take a quick photo op. Either that, or he is trying to dig a small hole to get his golf ball.

And, Vesta, Whats wrong with great grandmothers cooking dope?  They are only 45 years old.

Now that would be very funny if it were not so true in some places.  June Carter Cash married at 13 but I don't think she ever cooked anything after she turned 20.   Check it out, read about people married for 65 years and they are only 78 years old.

Buy the books send them to school and they eat the teacher, well if you get the kids to read they will figuratively eat a stupid liberal teacher.   AND get it on video.

About the old folks a brewing up hooch in stills and bath tub Gin, heck had it not been for Probation half the ancestors would not have inside plumbing and sent the grand kids to college.

Our fathers and grandfathers came home from WW2 to the GI education grant,  What do our VETS get today, One heck of a world and the changes,--------Nuts I may be but by golly at least as we grew up there was Patriotism and religion in our lives, loyalty to family and few were on the dole.

Out teachers taught us the 3 R's and never expected the parents to get involved, this was their job and they did it well.
