Oscar-winning film star Ernest Borgnine dies at 95
« on: July 08, 2012, 04:49:58 PM »

Quote
LOS ANGELES –  Ernest Borgnine, the beefy screen star known for blustery, often villainous roles, but who won the best-actor Oscar for playing against type as a lovesick butcher in "Marty" in 1955, died Sunday. He was 95.
His longtime spokesman, Harry Flynn, told The Associated Press that Borgnine died of renal failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center with his wife and children at his side.
Borgnine, who endeared himself to a generation of Baby Boomers with the 1960s TV comedy "McHale's Navy," first attracted notice in the early 1950s in villain roles, notably as the vicious Fatso Judson, who beat Frank Sinatra to death in "From Here to Eternity."
Then came "Marty," a low-budget film based on a Paddy Chayefsky television play that starred Rod Steiger. Borgnine played a 34-year-old who fears he is so unattractive he will never find romance. Then, at a dance, he meets a girl with the same fear.

So very sad. Emperor of the North was one of my all time favorite movies. I can't think of any of his work I didn't like. RIP.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

I 100% agree.  But, I think one of the funniest things Ernest ever did was during this hot mic moment on Fox & Friends:  http://thedailywh.at/2012/07/08/rip-ernest-borgnine-at/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+feedburner/oicv+(The+Daily+What)
I loved his work, and he seemed like such a genuinely good man.  RIP

I liked him in Superfuzz and Convoy, and of course McHales Navy. He also played in Jesus of Nazareth. He was a good actor.

These things happen in threes. We have had Andy Griffith and Earnest Borgnine. Now who is going to be the third?

Dunno. Doubt it. I was merely just thinking of another upstanding patriot type of guy who is aging.

Man, if it would be Clint Eastwood, I would be practically brought to tears (like I was with Andy Griffith). He is a great man, a great patriot, and a great actor. One of my all time favorites.

So who reminds you the most of your father or grandfather in the movies or TV ?

This Ernest was so much like my father , a knuckle dragging ape of a Boson's Mate I love his shows.  No nonsense at sea but real hell raiser on shore.  He resembled Ernest and darn when he came home from sea saw to everything was ship shaped.

Dad has been gone a long time but when I saw Ernest I still felt my Dad was still here.   Sad--I feel like I have lost Dad for the second time. :bawl: :bawl: :bawl:
