Is anyone else hearing this?
« on: July 03, 2012, 05:34:29 PM »
I've been doing some pre Independence Day shopping. You know, boring stuff to buy, but fun because you know it's a shared experience: steaks, liquor, beer, beer, liquor, potato salad, that kind of thing. I know it's hokey but I'll do my annual watching of 1776, uncut.

Also, I had to make some utility-related phone calls, some insurance-related phone calls, you know the sort of telephone-tree timewasting. All the reps said "Happy Holiday." I said "Happy Independence Day" in return. I didn't think it might mean something until the third time no one responded in kind--you'd think one would make a second comment.

So everywhere I go in person as well, the shopping in the first paragraph, I'm hearing "Happy Holiday." When I said "Happy Independence Day" back the first time, I got a little funny look, but didn't think too much of it. Happened at least twice more. I tell you those looks said to me, "what are you, some kind of nut?" For calling tomorrow Independence Day.

I cannot escape the the conclusion-by-gut that I'm hearing the same thing done to Independence Day as is constantly being done to Christmas.

Not going to let it ruin the day, but still...bugs me.

Time to open some rum. I had the idea of mixing it with the syrup from several canned fruits. Anyone else ever try that sort of mix? Rum seems most appropriate to me as an Independence Day drink. I mean, it was one of the commonest and cheapest drinks around back then.

Most people I see say "Have a safe and happy Fourth".

Those that know me use to say "don't blow yourself up", but that was back when my wife and I bought several hundred dollars worth of fireworks to set off.  I miss those  days.

That was my childhood.

My dad always bought the awesome fireworks that are shot off at some fireworks shows.  He lit them right on our block.  The cops showed up every year after a party pooper neighbor complained.  It was fun times.  :)

Garg. The "safe" part makes my face twist up. Sounds like you're of the mind to have an unsafe Fourth and I wish you that, because that's the way you like it!

Blow 'em up real good, Thundley! Happy Independence Day! Rocket some red glares pal.

HAPPY INDEPENDENCE DAY!!  to all.  Although I share your concern for the lack of patriotism in our country, I suspect the the folks in the retail business are trying to avoid some random liberal blowing up in their face. Like all the DUmmies that brag about getting FOX off business TV sets.

Cousin has an airstrip. It's on a lake and he owns two small areas across the lake. He got his pyrotechnics lincense and everything. He used to put on a free show every forth. Parking was on the airstrip side with the lake making a good safety barrier...and reflecting pool. Large crowd every year. But 9/11, insurance and government regs finally brought it to an end.....DAMMIT! :argh:

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

I haven't heard the term 'Illinois Nazi' in YEARS!!  :rotf:

... probably because I haven't lived near IL for seven years.  I have to be nice though, my husband is an IL native.

I've always considered "Have a safe holiday" to mean that you should be careful of the idiots driving on the highways. Lotta drunks out there.

We've been saying at work..."Have a safe and happy 4th"....

Don't know about others, but I say "safe" because many people are traveling, or out on the lakes today. Lot of drunks out there.....

I remember many years ago, my first stop at South of the Border, SC and all the fireworks supermarkets . . . walked in and my jaw hit the floor.  Man, did we have a fun Independence Day THAT year!   :yahoo:

What I don't get is we have a no fireworks allowed in my county yet everyone buys them and sets them off.  What good is a law if it is not enforced? :???:

I do NOT look forward to the fireworks in my area because Belle, our golden retriever, is terrified of anything that flashes, bangs, booms, burps, blips, blasts, or freeps.

She's okay with farts, though.  :-)

There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

We were sitting outside for a while last night and the first couple of loud bangs made our beagle look up and around, but then she ignored them.   She was more interested in trying to catch moths and June bugs.

Well, in the case of immigration laws, it might be good for a few votes for ABM.
