Sucks though. I was watching a good movie I'd never seen before. Well, if you don't count those other 8 times.

Twenty-four yrs in Texas and I don't recall the power ever being out for more than twenty to thirty minutes maybe.

Underground lines maybe? SAme thing in AZ. I'm told certain areas aren't conducive to burying the utilities because of their climate or soil composition or whatever. We have above grounds line here in the midwest and you can blow on them and knock them down.  :thatsright:

There is that and Texas is on it's own power grid separate from the rest of the country. Our power won't go out because of a storm three states over.

Only a couple hours here, primarily when there is high usage, like when we had that deep freeze a few years ago.  Or if a moron drunk drives into the neighborhood transformer.  :thatsright:

Well, I think in this case, it's not a matter of interconnectedness since it's not a grid issue here. From the horses mouth, our LOCAL substation was affected as well as many of the local(tap?) lines. I doubt that's the issue now since I've been sitting in my AC since Saturday afternoon while Stinky is over in Bal-more bitching about his neighbors not sharing their generator wealth  That storm was massive that moved through here, Zeus. It brought pretty widespread wind damage from INdy on over to the East Coast. From what I heard it was a dericho and that falls in line with the type of damage that affected trees and power lines. As we mentioned earlier, they don't bury lines here so they are ripe to be blown over or torn down by falling trees(did I mention we had a LOT of fallen trees?)

No need to get all Texas snooty over there.  :-) Trust me if the shart hit the fan, our plan is to load up all the people and whatever supplies we can take and head for the state we know is going to leave the heap of steaming poo to itself. I say you kick any illegals out and all the liberals inhabiting Austin and make room for us traveling conservatives. LOL :-) IN the meantime, we are hoping to turn this thing around so we don't have to pull up our kids' roots and start over. We got some fight left in this :cheersmate:

:lmao: That's happened here before too. At my old house, could see the power line they'd take out that would cause things to go bye bye for a couple hours.  :thatsright:

Neither will ours. We have a nuke plant right down the Savannah River called Plant Vogtle.

Central heat and air is a must down here. I lived in an old house coming up with no central system. Those little window units constantly ran, all 5 of'em.

Tell that to people that went thru Hurricane Ike in Houston and southward to the coast who were out of power for weeks in some areas.

Officially 106 here yesterday. Broke a record set 40 years ago when we were headed into the next ice age.

Well of course when the poles and the lines go bye bye it just might take awhile to get the juice flowing again. Regular rain and thunder & lightening storms wouldn't be a problem.

Hot and Humid here, basically have the AC running all day and night in the house.

Yeh, it's been running 101-104 here daily and no rain in sight.  So humid though that when you walk outside you are drenched in sweat to just get your mail.  My ac bill is HUGE!

So, does power go out for reasons other then grid in Texas or what?  :lmao: Come on, Zeus. I like you, but you jumped to the grid thing wihtout knowing what was going on here. WE have lines and trees(on lines) down all over. Observe:

Downed lines Hamilton Road

Apparently, when TExas gets their lines pulled down, they also experience breaks in power. Go figure.  :thatsright:

We've been through plenty of 'rain and lightning and thunderstorms'....This was a dericho with hurricane strength straight line winds(87 MPH gust as I understand). It is NOT a normal occurrence for this area so it would stand to reason that it would do some serious damage. We normally can weather snowstorms and moderate ice storms but you send in an inch of ice and it would have the same effect this storm had. EXTREME weather conditions usually do damage, even to areas used to certain conditions.

BTW, here is a cool picture I took right before the storm. Apparently, these clouds are mammatus clouds and usually inhabit the underside of the 'anvil' of a particular serious thunderstorm.

JTY, that is a cool picture.  We have weather related outages in my part of Texas.  (Texas is pretty big.)  I have been fortunate to not have any since I lived in my house, but that isn't to say we haven't had outages in other parts of town, due to weather.  Just not in my hood.  Yet.

Same here. We have relatively few and they are usually short lived when people hit a pole with their car or something. The only time it goes longer then about 30 minutes is when something severe(and rare) rolls in. They keep talking about Hurricane Ike for example and we never lost power even though a similar number here did. We did lose it during the ice storm in 2004 though, but again it was for about 24 hours.

And yes, I'm aware this part of the country was affected by grid issues over a decade ago. I was not here when that happened and of course it speaks to the smarts of the independence streak of Texas that they maintain their own grid because of the fact it stays out of regulatory reach alone is super smart on the decision makers there. However, everything I've mentioned above was not grid related so that point is really irrelevant in this discussion.

As for the pic, yeah I didn't know I took something that apparently doesn't show it's face all that often when I took it. I just looked up when the kids and I came out of where we had dinner Friday and went--hmmm, that's odd looking. Of course that means I had to whip the phone out.  :lmao:

Mid 90's here, (at the house I don't think it broke 80 this past weekend) but it's only been in the mid 80's last week and the week before. Normally it's around 100+ but this year's been really, really nice.

Apparently you don't live in Grayson County!! If the power goes out here, if it's restored in two hours or less, consider yourself lucky. Last outage was over six hours and it was already warm. Damned landlords won't buy any extra screens for the windows, so I can't even open the windows for a breeze.

Here in Habersham County, GA, we've had some 100+ days and strong storms.  The first few days of extreme heat brought little humidity, so while it was scorching it didn't take your breathe away.  Now the humidity is back and it's typically sweltering.

The plants, especially the hostas, have been burned to the point of me having to cut them back.  They look like they've been oven toasted.  Looks like I'm going to lose some spring planted dwarf evergreens as well.  I've kept them watered, but it just isn't the same as rain.

The bright side of the storms is that all my rain barrels have been filled again.  I'll have enough to keep the pond topped off for a few weeks.

About 95 here at 10 AM. The heat index is supposed to go up to about 107 today, all the more reason to NOT heat up the kitchen cooking anything. I'll just do the cooking outdoors - the roast beef, the potatoes, the corn on the cob, whatever.
