It wasn't that she couldn't hack it (The fact that she had an 87% approval rating as governor before the 2008 campaign is proof of this); It was that she was tired of disguting, heartless, liberal jackasses like you DUmmies slinging vile, obscene insults at not just her, but her CHILDREN!
Up until the 2008 election, it was generally considered okay in political debate to insult a politician as long as it wasn't a racial/ ethnic slur or a death threat or anything; However, it was considered kind of a rule that said politician's children were generally off limits for such treatment (Unless it's a politician's thirtysomething son getting arrested for DUI or something), because they have done nothing, and were thrust into the spotlight against their will because of who their parents were. It was a good policy to have.
Once Sarah Palin entered the race, however, that rule was thrown right out the window. It was considered perfectly okay for liberals to openly insult Palin's children in the most digusting, bigoted terms imaginable, for lecherous talk show hosts like David Letterman to make jokes about her underaged daughter being impregnated, and for Huffington Post's forum to make separate threads for each member of the Palin family, each one jam- packed with revolting insults (i.e. One for her son track had a few posters claiming he's gay).
Not even Trig, a mentally handicapped baby, was spared from the left's hate and venom. On the contrary, they saved their most vicious, heartless insults for him, everything from a constant barrage of "Laugh at the retard" jokes (As someone with mild learning disabilities who was picked on for them as a kid, I think there's a special section of Hell reserved for people who make those kinds of jokes), to claiming that he was the son of Bristol rather than Sarah, to some DUmmies even having the gall to claim that the reason for Trig's mental disability was that he was supposedly the product of incest between Bristol and Track. Rot in Hell, DUmmies.

Failed?
1. As I noted, her approval rating as governor before being McCain's running mate was 87%.
2. She helped negotiate an oil- drilling contract that brought a buttload of money and jobs into her state.
3. She helped root out and expose political corruption in both parties within Alaska's government.
She did a hell of a lot more than Obama did before he decided he wanted to be president.
