The truth about porn
Of late I've noticed several threads decrying the bouts of misogyny on DU. Maybe it's just my own gender getting in the way , but I can't say that I've seen a whole lot of it - but I've learned to trust people when they say "this is offensive to me." And the truth is I've seen a lot of misogynic replies to these posts - mostly low-key stuff about "radical feminists," or whatever, but it's there. And one of the more persistent memes presented as a "rebuttal" is that since feminists "hate porn," that's why they're outside mainstream and nobody likes them and all that.
Yes, people are defending porn to attack feminism. Weird, huh?
Well, guys - and yes, I mean that literally, guys - let me explain a few things about porn to you. Pornography is damaging. it's dehumanizing, it often revolves around violence and brutalization, it causes weird problems both in the bedroom and greater society, and it perpetuates all sorts of ugliness that we'd like to forget about.
First off, a definition. What IS pornography?
It's been said that everyone has different ideas of what pornography is. The phrase by justice Potter Stewart in reference to hardcore pornography, "I'd know it when I see it" is often bandied about, but he was in the mid-1950's. In today's online world, where porn is open and free to access, I believe it's become much easier to classify. So here's my shot at it;
Pornography is video, art, or still images depicting human acts of sex intended to titillate or sexually arouse the viewer. It is part of a larger body of sexually-themed expression collectively termed erotica which includes written words, nudes, and nonsexual fetishes. Under this definition, your typical playboy spread, lacking depiction of sex acts, is erotica but not pornography. Similarly written "sex stories" that lack graphic elements fall under erotica but not outright pornography.
Pornography can be further divided into softcore and hardcore categories. The edges of these are a little blurry, but my definition would be the difference between overt acts of sex being "hardcore," while depictions of masturbation and implied sex would be "softcore." Under this, your average late-night cable skin flick is softcore since nothing is really "happening" while a hustler spread depicting penetration would be "hardcore."
While certain forms of erotica can be as bad as porn, I'm going to stick with the narrowed focus for now.
So now that we have that in order, you're probably wondering "okay, so what's so bad about porn?" On its own, if porn were just what the definition says, nothing. On the face of it, there's nothing wrong with enjoying the sight of people engaging in sex (provided they allow you to do so, of course.) We all enjoy it, and it seems that it may even be an instinctive thing from our days with opposable toes. The problem is, it's become so much more than that.
The first and, if you ask me most prevalent and harmful problem is its dehumanization, mostly of women. The new prevalence of youtube-style pornography websites allows for some fast research into just the titles of these videos. Here's some from the front page of one of these websites:
"Taryn Thomas is a horny bitch," "Chubby slutty BBW Lesbians," "Little Whorphan Annie," "Jasmine is a cock whore," "Asian slut gives blowjob and swallow"
From another:
"Huge tits bitch tied up ****ed hard," "slave ****ed raw," "Amateur wife is a cock jockey," "Annette Schwarz the Circus Bitch," "Black freak ****ed"
And a third;
"White bitch bred by buck," "Lesbo sluts enjoy shower," "horny milf ass****," "pierced flat-titted slut," "crazy hooker dogged," "throat****ing a fat ****"
...And so on. Bitch, freak, slut, whore, ****, noticing a pattern here? Some of the sites allow comments on the videos in youtube syle; I'll spare you details, but I'm sure we all know how mind-numbing and offensive youtube comments can be, now multiply that by ten minutes of "schoolgirl slut ****ed in all holes" and I'm sure your imagination can fill in the blanks.

Doesn't have to, lady. You already freaking FILLED them all!
(For the record: This is only part of the long, drawn out, hilarious post. Sorry, but I stopped at the end of that paragraph. Anyone else who finds anything after this interesting, bring it on over.
This DUmmie is saying it's so dehumizing. It's so dehumanizing. The tied up shit, I wouldn't watch. Certain other things, I really just...wouldn't watch. They're not dehumanizing. They're just nasty. However, Scootaloo, you're forgetting one very, very important detail. They signed up for the things they do. Many of them even like it. Nobody tied them down to a chair (yet) and forced them to sign a paper saying they promised to **** "X" amount of guys, girls, dogs, sheep, etc that day. What's wrong with you?
And, I answer: I think it stems from a very big problem with femanazis everywhere. Jealousy. They're jealous because nobody wants to bang THEM! Of course some guys like BBWs, but when that combines with smelly, ugly, and bitchy, it presents a problem.
Speaking of porn and your nights of sweaty monkeysex, how many people here have tried to have porn sex? Show of hands? Mine's up. I've done something so foolish.
Well you big, fat hypocrite! How can you sit there, and lecture others on porn ("lecture" is putting it mildly. That's one gargantuan post) when you yourself have tried it, undoubtedly fantasized about it, and undoubtedly watched it. I know about the last one because you mentioned prominent porn actor Peter North, and you also mentioned Red Tube. You're not only a hypocrite, you're an enabler.

3. Constitution of the United States of America, Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
By virtue of the 14th amendment, this extends to all levels of government.
That's all that needs to be said about pornography.
Uh oh. DUmmie will be sorry he said that. The thread is young though.
