So, MY damn day
« on: May 18, 2008, 12:14:44 AM »
I stayed up until about 3AM Saturday morning. Of course this means I'd be sleeping in until about 11AM. I wake up to cries from my little girl, Bella, my female Lhasa. Apparently my wife, with NO domestic skills at all, left both Bailey and Bella outside. She's in heat. Has been for a while. She has a denim diaper I bought her and I put it on here every time I leave. I slept upstairs in the "Chris" bed  because, apparently, I snore when I'm drunk, and woke up to the cries. I run downstairs and out the back door to my dogs. I pick Bella up and there's resistance. She's attached to Bailey. They had mated. DamnIT! She's still a puppy. I wanted to breed her, but not until about the second or third heat. ****ing dumbass left them outside when she ran Damn errands at 8AM. At this point, I could have probably strangled her f'n ass. This could, in fact, kill Bella at this age. She's 9 months old.

I don't know what to do. Bailey is a better breed of Lhasa, but Bella is a TON smarter. I wanted to breed the two, eventually. Now, I have no choice. It's either spay her now, or take the chance of her dying. I'm not keen on either. I DAMN sure don't want to lose her, but I do want a puppy from her. She's intelligent. Very intelligent. Hell, there is no DUmmie that's that intelligent, maybe with the exception of Operation Mindcrime or Bryant69.

What do I do?

Your best bet, I suppose, is to call your vet Monday morning.  There may be some options, but I'm not sure what.  Good luck.

Bummer of a decision.

I'd call the vet on Monday, and get a professional opinion.

Let us know what happens!

If it is less than 72 hours since they mated it is possible to get the canine equivalent of the morning after pill. If it is later than this then the earliest time at which pregnancy can be determined is about 22-28 days.

Call your vet, or call a 24-hour emergency pet clinic, now.

If you have to get her spayed and there are puppies in there can you not tell us?  That seriously freaks me out! :bawl:

Nine months is very young, but it really shouldn't kill her.  Any puppies will NOT be registerable, though.

Do NOT let her get bred again, hope for only one or two, and RECORD THIS DATE.  You will want to watch her very, very carefully in 60 days, as soon as she starts acting like she's in labor (tearing paper, not eating, possibly loose bowel movements, laying around and panting) time the labor.  If she goes 3 or 4 hours with no first puppy, seems to be in any distress, starts looking tired, whines...ANYTHING, get her to a vet for a ceasarean instantly.  And I do mean instantly, 3 AM, 4 AM, if you want her to live, don't sweat the vet bill.

She should come through that procedure just fine, though I would let her wait a year before breeding her again, limit her further litters to one a year, and personally, I wouldn't breed her more than 3 or 4 times max.  Definitely stop by the time she's five.

This does not have to be a tragedy.

I have a probably stupid question.  My dog is really big but she stopped growing before she got to 9 months.  Well not in weight because she is a fatty.  If the llasa is a really small dog wouldn't it be full grown by then?  Why would a pregnancy kill her?  I am not trying to be a butt I am honestly just curious.  Do their innards grow slower, or maybe they don't get the mommy instinct until later?

It really shouldn't kill her.  Something like a Yorkie or Maltese...maybe.  It's not much different than a 14 or 15 year old human...not good, but usually not fatal, especially with ceasareans available.  At worst, if she isn't fully developed, a very large pup could get stuck and cause problems, but a vet can take care of it without any problem.  Possibly not even do the surgery, just pull it.

One of the varied benefits of growing up working a breeding kennel.   :-)

I can also dock tails, remove dew claws, give shots both under the skin and intramuscular, assist with minor surgery, and clean up almost any mess without getting sick.   :-)

It's on. We took her today. She has 3 puppies and the vet said they're long. I guess they're going to be Bailey's size. She's small. Monday will be day 58, next Saturday will be day 63. She's about ready to pop.

BTW, why can't they be registered, Mrs. Smith?

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

I wasn't happy "at the time", but the vet said they seem healthy. Bella is also very healthy. If something happens to her, you can pretty much expect me to be absent for a while.  :(
