Study: Stand Your Ground Laws Increase Homicides
Texas A&M has a new study out on the effects of Stand Your Ground Laws that I tend to agree with this study (btw, in the interst of full disclosure both of my sibliings are AGGIES)http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/12379/study-stand-your-ground-laws-are-failed-policy

The new study, from the Department of Economics at Texas A&M, comes to a devastating conclusion in its first page: Lie, it's from a political blog.

"We find no evidence of deterrence; burglary, robbery, and aggravated assault are unaffected by the laws. On the other hand, we find that murder and non-negligent manslaughter are increased by 7 to 9 percent. This could represent either increased use of lethal force in self-defense situations, or the escalation of violence in otherwise non-lethal situations. Regardless, the results indicate that a primary consequence of strengthening self-defense law is increased homicide."

I do not like stand your ground laws and hopefully the case of Zimmerman and the idiot in Houston will show these laws to be dangerous. Here is a link to the story about the Houston idiot who tried this defense http://www.chron.com/news/houston-texas/article/Houston-stand-your-ground-defendant-found-guilty-3630968.php

Burnt Orange Report, or BOR for short, is Texas' largest group political blog, written from a progressive/liberal/Democratic standpoint. BOR began on April 24, 2003, as a live-journal site written by University of Texas students Byron LaMasters and Jim Dallas. The site focused on happenings at the Capitol and around Austin.

Over the past 8 years, BOR has evolved to become one of the leading state blogs in the progressive Netroots, and has featured the writing of dozens of staff bloggers. BOR's writing team has matured from a group of independent and outspoken Longhorns into a group of legislative staffers, activists, organizers, attorneys, and thought leaders on politics in Texas. Our wider blog community includes institutional leaders, political consultants, elected officials, lobbyists,  and concerned Texans writing in our journals and in the comments.

Our site continues to be one of the most visited and widely respected state-level blogs in the nation. As of November 2011, Burnt Orange Report has had 6.2 million visits and 11 million page views.
Perfect example of unbiased information.

1. Sorry, that can't be. We've all been told that the new gun laws have reduced gun violence.

I've been told that the FBI says so.

4. This sounds like a job for the NRAhadists!

Come out of your not-so-undisclosed location and defend!
Defend what? Lies from from a self described regressive group of snot-nosed kiddies that don't know squat?

U.S. violent crime down for 5th year in 2011: FBI

Nope, fear of having the formerly easy prey being armed has nothing to do with this.  Would not this also be a reason for cutting back on the unneeded police? :sarcasm:

Given enough time and enough justified killings of the criminal element...crime rates will plummet. They will have to fall when the number of criminals fall. :-)

10. Seriously?
Gary Kleck?
Big time fail. I'll believe the FBI stats before I believe a discredited study.
Can't let that guy get away with that...oh no.

11. What are you talking about?

And this is what happens when the NRA crowd is confronted with empirical evidence. epic fail As soon as anyone challenges your dogma, all you can come up with is smilies. The FBI statistics are just raw data. and more accurate than dogma from illiterate students You are correct that crime rates have been dropping. going to be "but" here But that alone doesn't imply anything about the effect of gun availability on homicide rates --down is good a lot of things affect crime rates. like the ability of honest citizens to keep and bear arms The conclusions of those two studies I linked to were arrived at by examining gun ownership trends and homicide trends, at the state and county levels, and also controlling for potential confounding factors. you lose

And by the way, neither of those studies is by Gary Kleck. did he quote them? Also, neither of them has been discredited.ya, right, no opposing views allowed If you have any substantial criticism of either, I'd love to hear it. Here's one. You are a DUmbass. Refute that.

DUmmie Gothmog is totally wrong about the "Houston idiot".

Doesn't have a DAMNED THING to do with SYG.

Houston dude WENT to some else's home to complain about the noisy party going on, and ended up shooting someone there.

Not SYG in the least.

NOW, if someone at party RETURNED FIRE and killed Houston dude, THEN it's SYG.

Damned DUmmies can't see the forest for the trees, but that's OK, they like trees.   :hammer:

I'm not an over educated DUmmie, but a "study" looking at "homicides" at the state and county levels does not seem to matter when it comes to justifiable homicide as it applies to SYG and Castle Doctrine laws.  "Homicide" is a pretty broad category.

As for the FBI statistics dropping, seems to me that one major factor is the recent citizen friendly laws that no longer punish people for defending themselves.  Considering almost every release of crime statistics shows a sharp, downward bend in numbers where concealed carry laws have been relaxed, I would tend to believe that the leftist study cited in the DUmmie's OP is created bullshit.

DUmmies, you need to pay attention to what I am about to say:  Anytime someone cites a study, for or against anything, ask them exactly what the raw data showed and how the conclusions were reached.  Any organization with an agenda can manipulate or outright omit whatever data they wish to prove their point; a good example of this would be the Hockey Stick Graph.  Unless you can look at the raw data and extrapolate a real, scientific conclusion, you're just parroting someone else's analysis and, more often than not, spreading propaganda.

Been watching this case, strange that this ever came up.      So a neighbor is driving you nuts with loud noise on their own property.           WTF do we pay taxes for but to be able to call the police to handle this stuff.    Neighbors house catches fire, we call the fire department not trot over with a pan of water., or a can of gasoline.

Sorry but the SYG is for victims of unexpected violence, not for bully's who strap on and decide to confront someone and when the confronted fight back shoot them.  Bristol Palin comes to mind.    She, attacked verbably by a stranger, has been sued for fighting back verbably.

I still believe she had the right to deck the dude, he was in her face spewing fighting words.
