Omaha Steve had a hand in city council reversing itself! (costs $50,000 more for the 6 month delay)

Council votes to clear riverfront homes

Nineteen years ago the odds would have been long against Iske Place and Elbow Bend residents cheering a decision to demolish their homes.

That changed May 29 when residents of the riverfront communities burst into spontaneous applause after the Bellevue City Council voted 5-0 to buy their homes, demolish them and restore the area to wilderness.

The difference was three floods in almost 20 years.

In 1993, 1996 and again in 2011, residents endured floods that chased them from their homes.

FULL story at link.

Remember the 10,000 flyers I distributed on March 31st and the following week?

And there is a controversy brewing in Eastern NE politics about a primary race winner.  Details in a few weeks.

I've read all this stuff a half-dozen times since the big guy launched his brilliant council campaign.

I still have no idea what he's talking about.

Neither does he.  :-)

I'm curious as to what scandal is brewing though, knowing Stevie though it will be boring or he will never mention it again.

The same thing happened to the three houses next to my childhood home (until I was in 5th grade) in Omaha. There was a creek behind our house (Cole Creek) and it flooded all the time. Several people and kids died from drowning in that creek over the years.

We've heard this promise before.

It almost inspires me to write a new story, "Omaha Steve meets franksolich," but I'll pass.

Well, I read the article he links to and nowhere is Steve Dawes or his flyers mentioned. Bunch of other people are quoted and their work discussed, but not a tiny little miniscule acknowledgement of Steve's miminal effort is even offered. Obviously poor reporting by the reporter who couldn't even bother to get to the big story of Steve's flyers.

By the way, I just checked something.

www.electstevedawes.com is still up.

It's of course being shut down, probably at the end of the calendar month.

If one hasn't seen the site in its post-election glory, check it out before it's gone.

Damn, the big guy's friends did an excellent job.

I for one, am happy to see that Steve has bounced back from his crushing defeat.  It just goes to show that you can recover from anything if you don't have a firm grasp on reality.

I'm not so sure the big guy's got a grasp on reality, not even a feeble one.

I'm of course concerned, because I got nothing against the big guy, and it bleeds the heart, wounds the soul, this prospect that he might be making an ass of himself again.

3. Wow! That's great and do we ever need more of your kind running for State and local office.

View profile
It's even more impressive that you articulated an issue of importance to the community and then carried through on the promise in a timely manner. If more politicians would perform on their campaign promises instead of the old change of heart once they get elected people would have a higher regard for government at all levels.

I can only hope that you will use the experience to someday seek statewide or even higher office. Sounds to me like you are on the way to bigger and better things.

Congrats!!

That, I find the most aggravating thing about my fellow Nebraskan; this "I've got a secret" nonsense.

The big guy's trying to be coy, in the manner of some short, shy, coquettish, alluring female.

The big guy's woefully miscast in that role.

6. Some Cavers are eating crow

Here is one: Magnum Canis Abilene, KS

I am deeply, deeply concerned that an avowed Socialist is running for Bellevue City Council. Steve Dawes' recent advocacy of the takeover of Bellevue's gas service by the government, and his desire to squander City money buying flood-damaged riverfront property (putting money in the pockets of his corrupt union cronies), shows all of us that Steve Dawes is not good for Bellevue.

http://www.topix.com/forum/city/bellevue-ne/TT60GLKTH6J7JHDPJ/p2

Ok I realize that I'm not nearly as intelligent as the sooper geniuses of DU, so how is it we are eating crow exactly?

What Steve is doing is saying on Saturday that 0bama should wear a blue tie, then on Thursday he wears one, then claims that 0bama chose that tie because he posted it at DU.

Come on Stevie we know you pretty well now and when you have a secret it always turns out to be pretty much nothing.

I'm trying to figure out what this rumor is, about a primary winner.

There were no high-profile primary contests in Nebraska this year, other than that for the Republican nomination for U.S. Senator, which was won by my fellow Sandhillsian and dutch508's next-door neighbor, Deborah Fischer.

You may recall that as late as the Saturday preceding the primary the following Tuesday, the pundidiots had speculated she'd finish no better than a distant third, and more likely than that, fourth.

The talking faces on television have no understanding of Nebraska.  Her votes from the Sandhills didn't amount to much, a few thousand.  Nebraska's a pretty small state, but a few thousand votes isn't going to get a state-wide candidate very far, if anywhere at all.

However, such is the respect and awe in which other Nebraskans--Omahans, Lincolnians, Bellevueans, Grand Islanders, those on the farms of deep-black-soil Nebraska, those on the ranches in the butte counties; all very different from here--hold Sandhillsians, those who know Nebraska immediately pegged her the winner.

Whatever the rumor is, it can't be about her.

However, those in the camp of her opponent, a has-been former governor and senator, were notorious during the 1982 gubernatorial election in Nebraska, for spreading lies and falsehoods and slanders about the then-Republican governor, Charles Thone.

If there's anyone in America who understands how Sarah Palin feels, it's Charles Thone.

Well, that worked for them in 1982, but it won't work now, because due to the internet, Democrats don't monopolize the flow of information any more.

I suspect the big guy's "big story" involves some minor local primary race.

It is interesting to note that two of the six responses to Steve's OP are from Steve himself, and both of those mention the Cave.

If it were not for the inspiration provided by the Cave, resulting in Steve mentioning that Cave, Steve's OPs would sink into oblivion.

More later.  Oh wait, that's Steve's line.
This too shall pass.

Council President Scott Houghtaling said the deal with FEMA, the NRD and Sarpy County grew more palatable after it was made clear that Bellevue’s contribution could be made partially in kind.

The buyout effort was a new area of controversy for Bellevue. The city had not been involved in the 1993 proposal because the three riverfront communities then lay outside the city’s zoning jurisdiction. Its jurisdiction has since expanded to include them, and Papio NRD officials made it clear that the buyout would not proceed without a Bellevue contribution.

The city came under additional pressure after the riverfront residents hired attorney Thomas Freeman, who said he would file lawsuits if the city did not join the buyout.

It appears that Bellevue is being forced into this - which to me is utter bullsh$t.
