Any Barry Manilow fans out there?
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:20:39 AM »
Last night I went to see him in concert. He's 68 now and doesn't move like he used to, but he can still sing. My favorite part of the night was when he took a short break to change his suit jacket and his crew started a video of him singing the newly released 'Mandy' on one of the late-night talk shows.

As expected he came out and sat down at the piano just like he was doing in the video....and proceeded to harmonize with himself on chorus while playing the piano.

He's stretched like a turkey, has old man hands, and you can barely see expression in his face, but he's still got the voice. Good times! I will tell you though, during the performance of his first song of the night, I would've bet money he was lip synching. There was something odd about it, for sure. He definitely wasn't the rest of the night though.

The songs brought wonderful memories back of childhood. I used to stand in front of a mirror and sing his songs into my brush.  :-)

Last night he announced to the crowd that he was the Justin Bieber of the 70s. The crowd exploded. Then he said, "Really. Ask your moms."

He's a wonderful storyteller. He played an old recording he had of his grandfather trying to get him to sing Happy Birthday on one of those old recorders you'd find on the street for a quarter. So cute!

The crowd was mostly 60+ year old women (not us, of course), old gay guys, and whipped husbands. I was sitting next to a whipped husband and I kept busting him singing the songs with me. He thanked me at the end of the night for making the concert enjoyable for him. Haha! I went with 5 women I work with and they handed out red glow sticks at the front door. The girls and I had routines going with our glow sticks. So fun!

No. Although BM was a minor less-than-dark spot in that musical black hole known as the Sucky Seventies.

At least he is a musician.

I feel bad for the poor bastard "whipped husbands" who are dragged to those aging star concerts. Rod Stewart and Mick Jagger are particularly offensive.

Barry Manilow for me is a diminishing returns musician.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

Some of the best music ever written came out of the 70's and 80's. The 60's and 50's also had some great music (Especially the big band stuff with people like Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Perry Como, etc.). But, if you want to talk about the sucky years, look at 99.9% of everything from 1990 to the present (sure there are times where something good breaks through the cracks, but it is rare. Especially since you don't need talent to get a record deal anymore. It is all about marketability and how much the record company can make off that one hit song you might be lucky enough to release.)

Love, love, love Barry Manilow.  I have several of his albums, and I mean LP albums that you play on a turntable.

This is off topic, but there is no sound I love more than the popping sound of a vinyl album.

Yes, but he didn't write that one. Bruce Johnston from the Beach Boys wrote it. That was one of Manilow's biggest hits though. It made him and Johnston multimillionaires.

I am not allowed to listen to Barry manilow in the presence of my husband.  In fact, he won't even allow most of my old vinyl LPs anywhere near his assortment of Zeppelin, Rush, Stevie Ray Vaughan, or Pink Floyd LPs.  One day when we were on a road trip and we were listening to my iPhone music, the song "Honey" from Bobby Goldsboro came up.  He said he'd had enough of my music.

He has a "jukebox from hell" list and many of my favorite songs are on that.   He hates any disco music.

Ummmmmmmmmmmm, no.   He's so proud that my son has picked up his love of classic rock instead of rap.

I've always had an eclectic taste in music. But since I started playing in pubic, I got more of an eclectic taste.

I seen him in Las Vegas last year and was pretty impressed.

He also insists on having a full band & orchestra with him.

I enjoyed the show at the Paris Hotel/Casino.
