Whatever happened to names like this?
« on: May 16, 2008, 12:00:20 PM »
I've been reading some old baseball history books lately, and I keep running into names like "Heinie".

I don't know why anyone would dislike such a lovely name as "Heinie" in the 21st century.

There are over 20 players who played major league baseball in the late 19th century-early 20th century with this name:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/player_search.cgi?search=Heinie&Search+for+Player%2C+League+or+Team.x=28&Search+for+Player%2C+League+or+Team.y=9

Any other names you wish or wonder why they haven't come back in style?

There hasn't been a whole lot of Franks, alas.

I also looked up my real first name, and there hasn't been a lot of those either.

Is it a nickname for Heinrich? Sounds so odd to call someone "buttocks". :-)

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Most of the guys were named Henry.  I'm not a name origin person, but I suppose they could have originated from Heinrich.
