After nearly two weeks of deliberations, the jury in the John Edwards corruption trial has reached a verdict. The court clerk at the federal courthouse in Greensboro, N.C., said it will be read at approximately 2:30 p.m. ET.Edwards is charged with six criminal counts—conspiracy, four counts of receiving illegal campaign contributions and one count of making false statements—for allegedly soliciting and secretly spending over $925,000 to cover up his affair with Rielle Hunter, a campaign videographer, during the 2008 presidential election. If he had been convicted on all six counts, Edwards faced up to 30 years in prison and $1.5 million in fines.
Pretty sure it's after 2:30 ET, but still no word other than there is a verdict.
Half an hour to go.
It's 2 here in Tejas, so wouldn't that make it 3 on the Least Coast?Guess they want to build the suspense.
[Updated at 2:55 p.m. ET] The prosecution has asked for the jury to go back in the jury room to deliberate. The defense has asked for a mistrial on the remaining counts. The judge is taking a five minute recess on the matter. The judge has the option to issue an "Allen charge," which is essentially a request from the court for the jury to go back into deliberations and try again to reach a unanimous verdict on the additional five counts.
[Posted at 2:53 p.m. ET] The jury in the John Edwards trial has only reached a unanimous decision on one charge against John Edwards. The group of jurors said that as of this moment they could only agree on the charge of illegal campaign contributions from Rachel "Bunny" Mellon. We do not know which way the jury decided on that count.
[Updated at 3:08 p.m. ET] The judge in former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards' federal corruption trial has ordered jurors to continue deliberations after they announced they had reached a verdict on only one of six counts. The judge has issued an "Allen charge," which is essentially a request from the court for the jury to go back into deliberations and try again to reach a unanimous verdict on all counts.
Edwards should have been locked up years ago.
Before any of his "channeling" attempts.
A North Carolina jury found John Edwards not guilty on one of six counts in a campaign-finance trial, and declared itself hopelessly deadlocked on the remaining charges, leading the judge to declare a mistrial on those counts.
Not guilty on one count. Mistrial on the others.http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/john-edwards-verdict-deadlocked-jury-back-deliberate/story?id=16378643#.T8fV87BW2So
Since it was a mistrial on the other 5 counts, that means the prosecution can go after him again on those counts right?I bet they don't though.
Why do I have an image of Blago in my head?
It's the hair. It does it every time.
It has to be something. I am just wondering if we will see Edwards on Dancing with the stars?
We may not see him in jail, but we damned sure ain't gonna see him on the national political stage. The ****stick is DONE.
