Taxpayers Want Diddy's Son to Fork Over His $54,000 UCLA Scholarship...
Less than a year after Diddy's son, Justin Combs, committed to play football at UCLA, state taxpayers are calling on the well-heeled freshman to turn over his $54,000 scholarship to students who need it more.

In an interview with CNN, education contributor Dr. Steve Perry defended Combs' merit-based scholarship, saying he earned it fair and square. At the Upstate New York prep school where Combs recently graduated, he maintained a 3.75 GPA while playing cornerback for the football team.

"He's done what he needs to do to be successful and in 'Ameritocracy' we have to accept that no matter who your father is, whether he be rich, poor or absent, that you can in fact be successful on your own merit," Perry said.

There's no denying Diddy can afford to send his son to college. The entertainment mogul was recently named the wealthiest artist in hip hop by Forbes Magazine, so far earning $45 million in 2012.

33. I think it's a phony story.

There is no substance here. It's meant to cause trouble.

"state taxpayers ..." is not any different than Fox News saying "some people say ..." or "people are saying ..."

What taxpayer?

What people?

"Some people say" that those behind this Yahoo story are trying to stir up juicy controversy with the child of a rich black entertainment artist to see how the Democrats react.

The goal: Hoping to cause not only hard feelings but some good old fashioned embarrassment - as well as waste our time & media time discussing this to our peril as the GOP pillages America & it's upcoming elections.

And now the school want's the money back because his DADDY is rich?

Why did they grant him the damn thing in the first place?

I'm usually not sympathetic to the plight of the rich… But they usually have to do some bad shit to be called on it.

Why is UCLA trying to scam this kid out of the money that they promised him in the first place, after he upheld his side of the bargain?

7. where does it say anything about the school wanting the money back?

In any case, I think it's tacky as hell for someone with his resources to accept a scholarship? Ugh.

None of that specifically belongs to the son.

Perhaps the son would like to make his way in the world on his own merits, not on the money of his father.

Besides, this is the very first time I can ever recall hearing of such outrage when a rich person's child gets a scholarship.

My objection is that daddy is rich and the son is going to school on a scholarship.

He graduated with a GPA of 3.75. The scholarship was merit-based.

If he earned it he earned it. My son got several scholarships (all merit based). He worked for them he deserved them.

I look forward to DU give all 1%ers so much benefit of the doubt and consideration for the fact they too pay taxes and earned what they have.

If I had the kinda cash Combs does there is no way I let him take the scholarship money. I'd be proud he qualified for it if its merit based, but I still wouldn't take it. I would pay for the education, and fund a scholarship or two of my own. Combs can certainly afford it. Just because you can take free money doesn't mean you necessarily should. Just personal ethics for me on this matter.

It's a football scholarship. He can't just "give it back", because the NCAA regulates those. If he doesn't accept it, it might just go away, it's not like you can transfer that to any other student.

By "give it back" people mean to decline it. No need to dissect things so semantically.

True, but it can't go back into the school's general scholarship fund.

We could afford to pay for our son's college and we paid for the balance of his school. It still wasn't cheap, we paid about $60k AFTER scholarships. I'm sorry but I'm going against the grain here, HE deserved the scholarships.  I don't care if we made the same amount Combs does, he deserved them fair and square. They were all based on his talent (he is an industrial designer), just as I'm sure Combs sons scholarship was based on the kids talent.

Why does his son (or my son) not deserve to take a scholarship (obviously not hardship based scholarships) that he worked for?  Be it with grades, artistic ability or athletic ability because his parents can afford to pay for it without scholarships?

Why not fund scholarships and let your son take the scholarship he earned? He can give back a lot more than the amount his son earned with his scholarships. It would show his son you work hard you get rewarded. He can then set up a scholarship in his sons name or some other cause.

He's worth hundreds of millions of dollars, I can't justify his son getting a scholarship.

ITA!

Why is it wrong for him to take the scholarship?

Because his Dad is worth hundreds of millions of dollars, why should he even qualify for a scholarship? I take care of my Mom, she's eligible for benefits up the wazoo including food stamps, but I take care of her because I can, we're not rich at all, if anything in my State we're considered lower middle class, but I won't dare take from someone who's truly needy and doesn't have family helping them like my Mom does.

Did UCLA even know who his father was when they granted the scholarship?  They might have just looked at his race and granted it to him based on that.  :-)

Dat monay four us.
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.

P. Diddy is just a baby daddy.

Baby daddies don't do college, they don't even pay for sneakers.

Besides, the money just came from UCLA's stash.

Didn't P Diddy coin the term "VOTE OR DIE" back in 2004?

Also, are the DUmmies aware P Diddy and son are black?  It's racist for DU to say Diddy's son should give back the money.

The kid earned it. Maybe, just maybe, he has a independent streak and will earn his own way without P daddy.

Yeah, I doubt it too but you never know.

I guess we could take a cue from the DU and say he should give it back but as conservatives what do we care what others do with their money or opportunities? Other "rich" kids get scholarships every day. It is the advantage of going to a good private school.

I could actually rant on both sides of this issue but I will just say the "classy" thing to have done was to say thank you but no thank you and for P daddy to break off a few million for scholarships for others.
