HP to cut 27,000 jobs

SAN FRANCISCO—Hewlett-Packard plans to jettison 27,000 workers as the growing popularity of smartphones, the iPad and other mobile devices makes it tougher for the company to sell personal computers.

The cuts announced Wednesday represent the HP’s largest payroll purge in its 73-year history.

The reductions will affect about eight per cent of Hewlett-Packard Co.’s nearly 350,000 employees by the time the overhaul is completed in October 2014.

HP hopes to avoid as many layoffs by offering early retirement packages. ................(more)

How can this be? I keep hearing how wonderful the economy is doing and how we desperately need 4 more years of 0bama to continue with this great prosperity.  :lmao:

Does Obama know about this?

Hell yeah and he don't care.

But, under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program, until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened.” - Norman Thomas, U.S. Socialist Party presidential candidate 1940, 1944 and 1948

They act like they don't know who has absolute power over California, and it sure isn't Whitman.

That's almost as dumb as blaming Obama for "the growing popularity of smartphones, the iPad and other mobile devices makes it tougher for the company to sell personal computers."

HP cutting jobs has nothing to do with either Bush or Obama.  They failed to innovate and reorganize to the changing market.  Plus, you had the previous CEO declare they were going to be a consulting company and slashing the price of their tablet within weeks of it's debut.  Poor management.  HP is now, supposedly, changing their direction and consequently needs to reorganize to be a leaner organization.  HP didn't see what was coming and now are trying to remain relevant.

27k jobs lost will, according to the owebuma number crunchers, reduce  unemployment  to below 8%. And just in time for the campaign season.
There were only two options for gender. At last count there are at least 12, according to libs. By that standard, I'm a male lesbian.

DUmpmonkey forgot to mention that the figure will only affect 8%.
For those folks, I wish them well.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Saying it's only 8% is minimizing the numbers though.  27k is a lot of people.  I wish them well, as do you.  Hopefully HP does this correctly.  Where I work they offered the executives a buy out to minimize excess middle management, and then shifted around structure under that.   I think that's what tends to happen to larger organizations, too many middle managers.  Consolidation and streamlining helps a lot.  I hope HP finds the right path and then sets up a good strategic organization that they were obviously lacking.

When there's that much pain inflicted on a company's workforce, the CEO, or COB, or whomever is the company's highest ranking officer should be sent packing too, with the same proportional severance package afforded to the rest being terminated.

Alas, such a perfect world has yet to be conceived!

Plus, Whitman is a new CEO righting the path (supposedly) from the previous.  HP could become another Kmart - failure to perceive the upcoming market and adjust accordingly.  I'll be watching the next few years to see what happens to HP.

Any commander in the US armed forces who displayed that kind of dereliction would be relieved. Just sayin'

Well, I see what you're saying.  The business world isn't run like the armed services, for better or worse.  I will give Whitman a chance as the new commander to make the changes she feels necessary to correct the previous administration's decisions.  To me it's hard to fault a CEO that decides it's time to streamline based on the ineffectual leadership that came before them.  :)

Truer words, never spoken, all that follows...
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."

C.S. Lewis

A community may possess all the necessary moral qualifications, in so high a degree, as to be capable of self-government under the most adverse circumstances; while, on the other hand, another may be so sunk in ignorance and vice, as to be incapable of forming a conception of liberty, or of living, even when most favored by circumstances, under any other than an absolute and despotic government.

These big companies often get very fat around the middle.  Any of us who's worked for one has seen it happen.  Political battles are won and lost, fiefdoms are grown.  All of a sudden you have things like

Executive Director for Best Practices, with a staff of 15 Assistants
Management Specialist, Diversity Initiatives, with staff of 5 Associates
Manager, Wellness and Fitness, with staff of 10 Deputies

It can be just like government, the lard creeps in.  Sometimes you gotta clean house.

If 0bama was running HP the headline would read 311,000 jobs saved or created at HP!!
When you are the beneficiary of someone’s kindness and generosity, it produces a sense of gratitude and community.

When you are the beneficiary of a policy that steals from someone and gives it to you in return for your vote, it produces a sense of entitlement and dependency.
