Memorial Day - what are you doing?
« on: May 22, 2012, 11:07:51 AM »
What are your plans for Memorial Day?

I plan on taking son and some other Boy Scouts to put out flags at the Veteran Cemetary here. And then we will go swimming at my brother's lake.  Grill some steaks and just relax with the kids.

Not sure, but ti's the day before Memorial Day that is the biggie for me.

We will be at state UIL band competition and as soon as my daughter is done with her performances we will be hitting the road for NC to visit my son before he's deployed.

Carrying the Coast Guard flag for the American Legion in the local observance and parade. Placing a small flag on the grave of a good friend who served in WWII.

I may be called on to make a very brief speech.

Quote
MEMORIAL DAY is a special day. Perhaps, however, it should also be thought of as, “REMEMBRANCE DAY.”

Please take some time to remember the importance of and thank our fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for our freedoms. As you observe this special holiday, remember what it means to be an American. It is not a day for political posturizing and speeches. It is not observed as the day when schools are dismissed for the summer, or when the swimming pools open, or when families go on their vacations.

To some, this is just another holiday; to we veterans, and to the men and women in uniform today, and to patriots, it is a time to remember,  and to honor our fallen comrades who gave their all during their call to duty and country. Please also remember those who are presently serving in our nation’s Armed Forces -  the Army, Navy, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force - protecting our freedoms and our country, ever vigilant, during times of both peace and strife. If you see a veteran or a member of the military, give him or her a smile and a “thumbs up;” it will be appreciated.

At 3 PM on Memorial Day many radio stations play the “Memorial Day Anthem” (Also known as, ON THIS DAY). If you hear this tribute while you’re at home, I ask that you pause to reflect on what it means. If you’re driving, you may want to turn your headlights on as a way of recognizing the significance of this day.

Please –tell everyone you see today, and every day, that we must remember to put the “Memorial” back in Memorial Day. If we don’t do this, maybe no one will, and someday, perhaps no one will remember or even care.

I'll be in Arlington for the next couple of days.  When I get back, I'm going to meet up with a coworker from the corporate office in Columbus.  I guess we'll go out for lunch or something.

And I'm still packing/moving.

Hit my sentiments exactly, CG. Prayer on a day like Memorial Day (or the day we're allocating as Memorial Day) has special significance.

And then, I'm playing a band concert/ceremony (? - dunno about this, as I've not played the gig before) which occurs AFTER the parade that I ain't marching in Columbia, MO.

Memorial at local park.
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

Iassa,

I'm going to be staying pretty much south of you.  I figure I'll leave Pfluegerville and stay down that way until I can get to I-20.  I'm going to be staying as far away from large cities that day as possible.  The last thing I need is to get bogged down in traffic somewhere.  I want to get to NC as quickly as I can.

Next time I ride up that way I'll give ya a holler and we can drink a cold one.  Hell, if you meet me at that Flying Saucer place I was at up there last year we can drink a BUNCH of cold ones!  LOL

This Memorial Day happens to be my 18th wedding anniversary.  So my beautiful bride and I will probably just hang out and enjoy each others company.
