DUmmies Puzzled By The Mountain State

It's funny when DUmpmonkeys demonstrate absolute ignorance on a subject:

Why does West Virginia skew so anti-Obama?
Note: I'm not lumping all WVa. residents in. I'm just wondering why it is one of the most anti-Obama states overall. Even more than many southern states. I know a good many Democrats live there. Is it because they mistakenly think President Obama is out to gut their coal industry?

Mistakenly!?! They MISTAKENLY think the democrat eco-nuts want to gut the coal industry?

1. racism and coal.
Yeah, they voted against algore and John F'n because they were black.

3. That's not the whole story

The Appalachians in general are Republican strongholds, a leftover from the Civil War when the southern Democrats would go in and slaughter any farmer who hadn't joined up to fight for the dubious glory of the slaveholding flatlanders. There's a long tradition of mistrusting anything Democrats have ever stood for.

DUmmy Warpy, banned from nursing for life due to drug abuse, could not be more wrong.

West Virginia was almost as strong democrat as D.C. They even voted twice for Jimmeh. Then came Clinton's gun control. Then the democrats went completely crazy on coal.

11. well, that's not the whole story. w. va was actually racist to the point of being anti-slavery.

they didn't want blacks anywhere near them - even in chains.

5. I was thinking that. It seems like they used..

to always be in play. Since it isn't one of the more wealthy states, should Obama try a populist message there? Would like to see it go back to our side.

Until the democrat party went crazy, West Virginia was never in play. It was a stronger democrat state than California or New York.

6. My guess is that people in West Virginia perceive that Obama has not dealt with issues that

have to do with them. For example, Obama has helped the auto industry and reformed Wall Street but the people in West Virginia think this has nothing to do with them. This is helpful to people in other states. Yes, people in West Virginia are effected by the health care issue but they must think it's a bigger issue in other states not them.

7. Jobs.

Coal and all the supporting and associated sectors.

Everybody shudders at the prospect, and coal is, in the end, the only thing besides tourism that they think they have to offer.

In reality, the state has a lot to offer, but in the current economic climate, tourism doesn't look great so they are reasonably concerned about what anyone talking clean energy might do to their way of life.

I'm sad for them.

8. My family comes from West Virginia

It is racism for sure. My parents did not think twice about using the n word (my mom still does it). She used it front of my kids once, and I let her know that she won't get to see the kids if she talks that way in front of them.

12. Lack of black voters to balance the right-wing whites

VA and NC went Obama in 2008, WV and KY went McCain, but white voters in VA and NC had slightly lower vote percentages for the Democratic candidate than those in WV and KY. (e.g. 39% VA whites for Obama, 41% of WV whites.) It's just that VA and NC had plenty of black voters to cancel out the conservative whites-- which evens the playing field between the parties.

GOBUCKS is right; West Virginia usually always voted straight Democrat.

It changed in 2000.

West Virginia even went for Carter in 1980.....which, in case one has forgotten, was a landslide defeat of massive proportions for the Incompetent One, equaling the defeat of Hoover by Roosevelt in 1932.

There's a microscopic iota of truth in what the defrocked warped primitive, she with the face like Hindenberg's, said, about pockets of Republicans in an otherwise solid-Democrat state, but every southern state had those, in their remote hollows and valleys, even Alabama and Tennessee.

But their numbers were in the dozens and scores, not hundreds of thousands that made any difference.

By the way, the mountain man primitive, the ThomWV primitive, has been absent for at least half a year now.

He had that brain surgery, and as we hoped, reported back later to the primitives that it'd gone okay.

Now I'm wondering if something happened--some unforeseen side-effect or infection--and the mountain man primitive finally set up his tent one day's march nearer the mausoleum for the last time.

It'd be nice to know that he's okay though.

Not just the lifeblood of the state, the lifeblood of American civilization - energy.

There's enough easily recoverable coal in West Virginia and eastern Kentucky to supply all our electricity needs for several HUNDRED years.

You could put one of those wind whirligigs on every acre of the country and not replace even a sliver of the potential energy available in coal, and coal does it at a tiny fraction of the price.

I don't think the democrat eco-nuts have any idea about the ramifications of destroying the coal industry, as they and the muslim want.

It's because we have old school democrats here you stupid ass. Not the lazy, gun grabbing, anti-energy, liberal kind. When Clinton got the Assault Weapons ban passed, it really pissed off a bunch of people here. Then you had AlGore running around screaming about Co2 and global warming and that was the end of WV voting for dem presidential candidates. Then 6 coal fired power plants got shuttered thanks to obumble's damned EPA along with the others having to spend billions to install scrubbers to comply with the damned EPA regs on clean air. Now our power bills are going thru the roof thanks to obumbles and you stupid effing tree hugger demcrats. Not to mention obumble's damned EPA dragging their feet on permitting new coal mines. Hell the EPA even came along and reversed a permit on a coal mine that had been approved under the Bush administration, idling it and costing around several hundred jobs. It also raised the price of steam coal making the remaining power plants have to spend more for steam coal.

Yeah dummie... we don't mistakenly think that obumbles wants to gut the coal industry. We know it!!! Who am I gonna believe, you or my lying eyes everytime I open up my power bill or read the local newspaper?

The bitter old Vermontese cali primitive has quite a history.

I've always wanted her to end up in the Top Ten DUmmies, so that I can tell her story, but she always only gets somewhere in the second ten, in the top twenty.

I'm sure that's the high-water mark for Eva Gage.

And surviving that miserable damned road, let alone for 20 yrs, is a feat in and of itself. It's better than it was but you know as well as I do DD, you better damn sure keep your eyes open, know what the hell is behind you and have your brakes in good condition.

Then back about 90, they outdid themselves and made 64 up/down sandstone mountain this side of Lewisburg. I've seen many a rig hit the emergency truck escape. One hit the one that goes up a hill for about a quarter mile and then at the top there is nothing but a big valley on the other side. I saw a rig go all up the way that thing one day and then the cab went over the top and down the other side. That is a scary damned long ass grade.

I remember when it was two lane. Course I was a kid then. You still got some grades on that thing... with nice sharp curves at the end of them to make it more interesting, along with many out of state flatlanders that don't know how to drive a mountain, that make it a complete bitch to drive. Especially in bad weather. Especially when they are driving a rig. I drove that thing for 6 years in a little Honda Civic. Back about 87-93. I've seen it all on that road. I've seen people lose boat off their trailers. I've seen RV's at the bottom of a curve on their sides. I've seen rigs blasting airhorns coming down a grade cause they lost their breaks and idiots that won't get out of the way. I've seen it all. I'm sure DD has as well.

I started driving the WVTP back in 1982, when it was mostly 2-lane and construction zones.  It was "completed" in 1988 I think, back when Arch Moore was governor.

You must be speaking of the left handed turn at the bottom of the hill at Camp Creek, coming down off Flat Top.  After 3 miles of a 5% downhill grade, not many loaded trucks had brakes left for that turn.  I even saw the rear wheels on a trailer catch fire coming off that hill.  Sandstone Mountain on I-64 is worse, it's a 7% grade.  Slow and easy is the rule of the day on that one, UP and DOWN.

You ain't kidding about the out of state flatlanders!  The ones from Ohio and North Carolina were the worst.  I drove a P-30 Chevy/Grummon step-van, and the funniest thing was on what few straight stretches there are on the Turnpike, these clowns would pass you like you were backing up, UNTIL you got to the next corner, then all brake lights as you went back by them, maintaining a constant 65 the whole time.

4th of July weeks were crazy.  Every other car you passed or passed you southbound was from Ohio.  One of our drivers actually wrote in the dust on the back of his truck:  "Will the last person leaving Ohio, please turn out the lights."  They would also be the ones trying to merge in front of you whenever they "suddenly" came up on an "orange barrel zone", the one that was advertised by the flashing traffic sign 3 miles back!

The worst time I ever had was trying to get home from Huntington in a snowstorm.  A normal 3 hour drive took 6 1/2 hours, with 5 of it spent on the Turnpike, dodging jackknifed tractor trailers and wondering where in the hell the snow plows were.

The scariest time was driving back one winter night when it was 15 below zero, passing tractor trailers that had stalled because their diesel fuel had turned to jell, and you were praying you gasoline engined truck would make it home because you didn't pack your sub zero sleeping bag.

I knew the Turnpike so well, this is what happened when I was pulled over by a female deputy just south of the Pax toll booth in Fayette County.  I noticed the deputy was wearing a Raleigh County uniform, and when she accused me speeding because I was "passing everything on the road", and that she "was going 80 when I passed her", I informed her I was only going 63 (in a 60), that my truck was governed to do a max of 70 (I lied, no governor), the only things I passed since the toll booth were 4 trucks and her, and she should have known she was NOT doing 80 because traffic was backing up behind her.  When she threatened me with a ticket, I said, "Fine, go ahead.  I like to hear how you explain to the judge why a Raleigh County deputy is writing speeding tickets in Fayette County."  When she practically screamed at me that we were in Raleigh County, I turned my headlights on and said, "No, not quite."  200 yards down the road was the green sign that read "Entering Raleigh County".

She threw my license and registration at me and told me to slow it down anyway, and STORMED back to her car.  I waited until she had left before I pulled back onto the road.   :lmao:

I did get a ticket for 21 in a 10, in the southernmost point in Kanawah County, a pimple on the ass of the state in a town call Handley, just north of Montgomery.  Magistrate that heard the case was not only the town's OTHER police officer, but on the town council as well.

Sounds like something you read in a book about trials in backwater redneck towns.  Went about the same way, too.   :lmao:

I started driving the WVTP back in 1982, when it was mostly 2-lane and construction zones.  It was "completed" in 1988 I think, back when Arch Moore was governor.
That's when it was being rebuilt to  interstate highway standards.

I haven't googled, but it is old, old, old, back to the 30s or 40s. It was two- and three-lane for all 88 miles.

I remember when I was a little kid hearing old folks marvel about the terrain being so rugged that it cost a million dollars a mile to build.

If the old turnpike hadn't been there, Zeke from Cabin Creek would have never made it to Morgantown.
