There isn't much happening in Nebraska, other than the three-way repug race for the U.S. Senate, but what might be of interest is DU's own Omaha Steve, running for the city council in Bellevue.

there's four candidates, the top two vote-getters advancing to the election in november. Omaha Steve is up against a rich repug, a teabagger, and a ron paul wacko.

Omaha Steve is a dedicated union member, socialist, and ghost-hunter. he is committed to social justice, the rightment of wrongs, and freeing mumia.

Omaha Steve is blue all the way, deep blue, especially after his wife gets done thwacking him with the rolling-pin.

and there's so much of Omaha Steve to be blue, as shown when he enveloped DU's peace-loving heroine, cindy sheehan, in folds of fat and drenching sweat.

in his job, Omaha Steve knows shit, which is a handy discernment to have in politics, knowing what's shit and what's not.

it's only a minor race, but i encourage all DUers to check it out, and to cheer him on.

Look up a thread, more there. :-)
Then-Chief Justice John Marshall observed, “Between a balanced republic and a democracy, the difference is like that between order and chaos.”

John Adams warned in a letter, “Remember democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet, that did not commit suicide.”

I find it to be distressingly uncomfortable for the freethinkers in Nebraska.

Looks like a disappointing turd place finish, disappointing because of all the outside help he got from us.

That's probably the only reason he went out and took down his two signs he had put out- so he could claim he pulled a muscle.

He phoned the whole thing in.  All those days he said he was going to hit the bricks and knock on doors?  We would catch him posting at the DUmp.  He never called in to local radio, never sold himself.  When all you have to put on your resume is a participation in a high school play, it's not very compelling.

I can only assume Steve expected vote-splitting to do most of the work for him. I also believe that Steve thought the percentages of liberal/conservative voters in his district to be a bit closer. Oh well.

I think too that was the big guy's assumption; that the two (R)s would split the (R) vote, the big guy sneaking in between them.

It's not an unreasonable assumption--after all, while Bellevue is red, Bellevue is not dark dark dark red--but the fact that the (R) primary for U.S. Senator encouraged (R) voters to turn out, while the (D) primary for the same office, being a done deal, discouraged (D) voters from showing up.

Such was not obvious back when the big guy started his endeavor, but this does show a propensity to believe that events will turn out only the way one wishes them to turn out.  He did not take into account any unanticipated events, or twists and turns.

I guess the big guy should blame Bob Kerrey for his own loss.

Hi5. I agree.
I'm beginning to wonder if the Friends or Steve Dawes took all the wind out of his sails the moment he saw that website. He couldn't argue with a single thing. So he stayed home watching his TV, and just played a game with DU.

Steve was defeated long before the first vote was cast.

Well, now he can hit the Ward 1 talk show circuit as Steve Dawes former Socialist Candidate for City Council.

I've watched people like the big guy all my life.

He's one of those in pursuit of a dream--the dream of getting a free ride.

And the big guy'll bust his ass, sweat out his guts, to get that free ride, working harder at chasing that, than in a real job.

But time's running out on the big guy; he's 55 years old, not much time and energy left running around on a wild goose chase to get a free ride.

I suggest--although the big guy doesn't pay any attention to what franksolich suggests--the big guy give it all up, and instead just do his job at the Omaha waterworks, assiduous and humble and grateful to his boss and his co-workers.

It's only ten more years--that's not long to wait, before he can cast off his waterworks space-suit, collect on his generous city pension and social security, living the happy lazy carefree life of a pig in clover.

The big guy should give the long-suffering Marta a long-stemmed rose every Friday to thank her how much she's done their 34 years of marriage, and to give Marta a little bit of loving here and there.  He needs to concentrate his attention on his children and grandchildren, and might find that more fulfilling than pursuing a rainbow.

And then the big guy and Marta can grow old and fat into old age, still as if teenaged love-birds, happy and secure in the knowledge that Love is forever, and even though each might be separated from the other in this time and place for a short time, in the Eternal Life that follows, they'll be together forever with God.

Much of the world, past and present, has had less happy fates than this.
