What, not one shout out for Hawkeye, a guy with no superpowers (like the Widow) but who pretty much backs down from nothin' and is just as much a "man without fear" as Daredevil? If Clint Barton is being played faithfully to how I remember him in the comic books (and it's been years since I've read comic books, but I am following the Avengers animated series), then he is a totally non-PC guy, pretty much as non-PC as they come. I guess that'd be plenty reason enough for the DUmmies to hate him.

I haven't read all their remarks, but I can guess that they're calling it "racist" because Black Panther hasn't been included. Then again, Ant Man/Giant Man and Wasp aren't in it either, and they were on the original team; Black Widow wasn't on the original team, and Cap didn't join until issue #4, but I can't see doing the Avengers without Captain America.

I am soooooo looking forward to seeing this. I'll be waiting a couple of weeks until the crowds die down a little. Man, only DUmmies could see something like this and take no pleasure in it. How anhedonic can you get?

I'd have preferred Ultron as the main villain, though. That could have gotten seriously dark, though, maybe too dark for what they were aiming for.

Does the Hulk have a significant role in this film? I'm a huge Hulk fan.

"Significant" would be an understatement.  You'll be pleased.  :-)

Exactly. People want to escape this screwed up economy. I know Star Wars did well in part because of that in the late 1970s to early 1980s, when the economy was in a bad state.

"Independence Day" during the Klintoon years.

Some people in the theater actually cheered when the aliens blew up the White House.

Thumbs up for the scene that you're talking about.

And how about that scene with Harry Dean Stanton?

Harry Dean Stanton is still alive?  What is he now, about 90.

The last movie I saw him in was "Down Periscope", with Kelsey Grammer, Rob Schneider, and Lauren Holly.

He was also in "Kelly's Heroes" and "Alien".  Never seen him as a headliner, he always played a "behind the scenes" guy.

Just make sure to stay until the very end of the movie.

No, past that part. I mean the very end.

They do some very good stuff with Hawkeye, too. That's part of the reason why I liked 'Avengers' so much: With such a big cast, you'd assume some characters would take up all the spotlight (i.e. Iron Man) and other, less well known characters would barely be used (i.e. Hawkeye). Not the case with this movie. All the major members of the team are given good amounts of screen time and character development, and for a guy with no powers other than being really good with a compound bow, they're able to have Hawkeye really kick some butt in the climax.
For how the DUmmies could hate him too, perhaps the fact that he worked as an agent for SHIELD in the movie, making him (In their minds, anyway) similar to an FBI agent, or even (GASP) a cop!

For the "Racist" thing, Nick Fury is black in the movie, even though in the comics only one version/ incarnation of him has been black.
For Ant Man/ Giant Man, there was a rumor a while back that he would get his own movie and be in 'Avengers,' but nothing came of it.

Ultron could make a good villain, and if you stay a few minutes into the closing credits, they reveal a villain who is definitely going be showing up in the movies some time soon, maybe in 'Iron Man 3' or maybe when they inevitably make 'Avengers 2.'
btw, my newspaper's movie critic gave 'Avengers' a grade of A-. So suck it, DUmmies.

But still, a movie based on a comic book? Hardly high brow art.

And yet you DUmmies absolutely love and want to emulate THIS comic book:

Let me put on my comic book nerd hat for a second (I still have several from my youth, and some are even worth considerable money now)...

Thanos is the ultimate bad ass mofo in the Marvel Universe. He is my all time favorite villain, and the Infinity Gauntlet mini series (as well as its prequel, the 2 issue "Thanos Quest") is by far my favorite story arc ever. Jim Starlin, Ron Marz, Ron Lim, such a golden age for me personally. That being said, Thanos is far too powerful for Iron Man to take on alone. It would have to be the entire team of Avengers. Hell, the Avengers would need to call in the Fantastic Four, the X-men, Spidey, Bruce Lee, Chuck Norris, etc, and it still wouldn't be enough. Thanos beats the crap out of cosmic god-like beings on a regular basis. Several times he has achieved basically ultimate power only to lose it because deep down inside he isn't really as evil as he wants to be.

Once upon a time there was a DC/Marvel crossover where the Teen Titans teamed-up with the X-men to take on Darkseid who had resurrected Dark Phoenix.

Yep, Thanos is unquestionably top dog in Marvel in villainhood and power, and my fave as well, although as with you I dipped in to comic book reading after years of absence just for the Thanos Quest and the  Infinity Gauntlet. I believe after that, he acquired even GREATER power than the Gauntlet in a short series called "The End". I've done some online reading about some of what has happened in the Marvel Universe since then, and although he doesn't have that kind of power right now, I know he freaking blasted freaking GALACTUS halfway across a planet some time in the Annihilation Wave, I think. I didn't read that, but I know of it. When you start out as an offshoot of the Eternals (Titanians), but with a Deviant streak, and become incredibly powerful through psionics. mysticism, and who knows what else,, and then die and have Mistress Death bring you back with 10x the power, and you're still accumulating power even after THAT, you are one badass dude. Plus, when it comes to strategy, he makes Dr. Doom look like street muscle.

I remember one time after he'd acquired the Gauntlet he outwitted Mephisto. This was such a cool cover:

But Thanos might be a weeee bit heavy for non-geeks to deal with; plus, as you said, he's far too much for just the Avengers to take down. After Thanos, Annihilus and Ultron have always been my picks. But yes, Thanos is just so COOL!

I don't know if this is fan art or with or without the Gauntlet, but really Thanos has enough power to do this to the Avengers without it; he did what he did to Galactus up top post-loss-of-Gauntlet (again, I'm pretty sure it was duting the Annihilation Wave):

Yeah, until well after the movie, I didn't know who that was at the end, and if I didn't know it was a Marvel movie, I might have thought it was Darkseid or something. In fact, I'd say about 15% of the people in that theater (and it was packed) even had an idea who that was. A few even thought it might have been Red Skull since he was sent into space at the end of Captain America.

Awesome scans. Yeah, after the Gauntlet he did achieve even greater power in "The End" where he wiped out the entire multiverse except for himself and Adam Warlock. Adam and Thanos discuss that the Marvel Multiverse was going to end anyway regardless of Thanos because flaws in reality developed due to too many resurrections of the previously dead disturbing the cosmic balance. Thanos sacrifices himself (temporarily) and the power of the Heart of the Infinite to recreate everything as it was without the flaw. Pretty cosmic stuff.

I have not read Annihilation Wave, but I did see some scans and Thanos, without the assistance of Cosmic Cubes, Infinity Gauntlet, or Heart of the infinite, defeats the then current incarnation of the Beyonder. An amazing feat. He stood toe to toe with Odin without power ups as well while even the Silver Surfer was blown away by Odin's power. I also recall some issues of Silver Surfer back in the late 90s where an insane Thor with the power gem is beating the crap out of guys like the Silver Surfer, Beta Ray Bill, and either Hulk or Drax the Destroyer. They have to call in Thanos who is the only one they know that can subdue an enraged, insane Thor.

I gotta do some rereading. Time to dig out the old collection again.

Oh please! the last time I listened to "highbrow" people was when I went to see My Left Foot with Daniel Day Lewis, worst movie ever, it was a nightmare sitting through it. Give me Michael Meyers and Jason any day over highbrow crap!

I'm reminds of an old song that John Conlee sang. I don't know the writer, but below is the lyrics and a video.

As the maid poured wine and we prepared to dine I know I was feeling out of place
At table as large big as a river barge and I love you written all on your face
I appreciate your hospitality but I wish that we would go
Let me drive us to McDonald’s and I’ll talk to you concerning something you should really know

I’m just a common man drive a common van
My dog ain’t got a no pedigree
If I have my say, gonna stay that way
Cause high-browed people lose their sanity
And a common man is what I’ll be

I’ll take a Chevrolet just any day so give your daddy back his Mercedes Benz
And there’s some common people that I hang out with
They’re my good time buddies they’re my friends
And I’d rather chug-a-lug a mug of Budweiser beer then sip a crystal glass of wine
So won’t you make your mind up to believe in me and leave this high living world behind?

I’m just a common man drive a common van
My dog ain’t got a no pedigree
If I have my say, gonna stay that way
Cause high-browed people lose their sanity
And a common man is what I’ll be

Yes I’m happy just being free
And I’m happy just being me
And I hop that you will see

I’m just a common man drive a common van
My dog ain’t got a no pedigree
If I have my say, gonna stay that way
Cause high-browed people lose their sanity
And a common man is what I’ll be

I’m just a common man drive a common van

Some people (read normal people) just want an escape every once in awhile and to not think of starving people in Africa or the state of the economy at home. You people are one huge wet blanket.

Oh...and I would be Robert Downey Jr.'s baby momma in a heartbeat.
