WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama is rallying union workers by painting a bleak portrait of America's infrastructure. He blames Republicans for focusing on tax cutting rather than creating jobs by updating and rebuilding highways, railroads and airports.

Obama tells the Building and Construction Trades Department of the AFL-CIO that U.S. highways are clogged, railroads are no longer the fastest in the world and airports are congested. Yet, he says, Republicans have repeatedly voted against his initiatives to create jobs by spending on construction projects.

Union members greeted him with chants of "Four more years."   :mental:  He urged House Republicans to pass a stalled transportation bill.

Obama says: "Republicans in Congress would rather put fewer of you to work rebuilding America than ask millionaires and billionaires to live without massive new tax cuts."

House republicans should tell Harry Reid that no spending bills other than defense bills, will be passed until a budget is passed.

So, Mr. President, you mean your shovel-ready infrastructure jobs program was a total waste of many billions of dollars, then?  Unusually large of you to actually own up to one of your many dismal failures, instead of trying to blame Bush for it.

And the railroads in the US had to give up on being the fastest in the world when it started getting massively unprofitable even before WW2 (Which artificially prolonged their ability to provide passenger service on a large scale due to rationing and material issues, putting off the final death throes until the early 60s).  It was essentially impossible for them to ever compete sccessfully with Federally-provided interstate highways and Federally-subsidized civil aviation, they make their money on long-haul bulk cargo that isn't highly time-sensitive, everything else is marginal for them.

You got it right....and if you want to revive the railroads, it's going to take a whole rethinking of how it's done. Running a system on 2 steel ribbons is old technology. We need something like a large supended "I" beam track or a buried vaccum tube system with average speeds of over 300 mph.
