At least I have an excuse... the autofocus on my good rig is busted.

That picture would have been easy enough to produce.  Open the aperture to it's widest point and focus on the closest object at hand.  Wallah, instant blurry background.

That's the "good rig"???  I'm no pro, but I can do better than that with a $3 disposable camera.
