Newt Gingrich will suspend his bid for the Republican presidential nomination next week, NBC News confirmed Wednesday, a day after Mitt Romney added to his commanding lead in the race with primary wins in five states.

After a four-hour meeting Tuesday night, Gingrich decided to end his run on May 1, NBC reported, citing a senior campaign source. The date was chosen for logistical reasons so his family can come up to the area, NBC said.

There is a "high likelihood" he will endorse the GOP nominee then, as well, NBC said.

He should have dropped out weeks ago. He had no chance.

It is about time he dropped out he should have done it a long time ago.
Voting for Obama for a second term would be like the captain of the Titanic backing into the iceberg again

That kooky old geezer never should have entered the race, but it does make his cult worshippers easier to identify.

True. He could not win dogcatcher outside his own district. Certainly not a Senate seat or the Governorship. He would get trounced in both.

I think Ron Paul knew before entering the race that he has no chance. He just wanted to get his view point out there. They are saying that Romney will have the delegates to get nominated by mid May. Then with it just being him and Ron Paul, that should be a given.

Newt called Mitt Romney today and told him he was dropping out, and that he is also going to endorse him.

I think Newt did more damage to the GOP brand and himself during this campaign.

With Newt exiting, Romney can finally focus on attacking Obama.

I hate this BS when some candidate announces that they are going to announce they are dropping out of the race.

Not so sure about that. Him and Santorum moved Mitt a little more to the right during the debates.

As far as brand goes, I think the GOP has had a horrendous brand ever since Newt left Congress with the out of control spending and debt racked up with Bush plus their wuzzie attempts to rein in the spending by Obama. I won't even mention the 118 trillion in unfunded liabilities, and that they keep kicking the can down the road for S.S. and Medicare. My opinion of the GOP brand is pretty lousy but anybody is better than Obama.

Dude, screw you. ;-) He was my choice after Cain was lynched. Now it's time to bow out. The only reason I don't want him to is to pull Romney to the fiscal right.

Let RP stay in as long as he wants. Less chance of him running 3rd party, and giving the election to owebuma like Perot did in 92 to Bush.
