A proposal from the Obama administration to prevent children from doing farm chores has drawn plenty of criticism from rural-district members of Congress. But now it’s attracting barbs from farm kids themselves.

The Department of Labor is poised to put the finishing touches on a rule that would apply child-labor laws to children working on family farms, prohibiting them from performing a list of jobs on their own families’ land.

Under the rules, children under 18 could no longer work “in the storing, marketing and transporting of farm product raw materials.”

“Prohibited places of employment,” a Department press release read, “would include country grain elevators, grain bins, silos, feed lots, stockyards, livestock exchanges and livestock auctions.”

The new regulations, first proposed August 31 by Labor Secretary Hilda Solis, would also revoke the government’s approval of safety training and certification taught by independent groups like 4-H and FFA, replacing them instead with a 90-hour federal government training course.

Rossie Blinson, a 21-year-old college student from Buis Creek, N.C., told The Daily Caller that the federal government’s plan will do far more harm than good.

“The main concern I have is that it would prevent kids from doing 4-H and FFA projects if they’re not at their parents’ house,” said Blinson.

Just more stupid shit to drive up the costs of farming.  My fathers last year of farming prior to his death the annual overhead to operate the farm was about 2.5 million. That was in 2004, I wonder what this new law  will cost farmers.

I remember growing up on the farm if we kids complained about a chore my dad took a perverse please in reminding us Child labor laws don't apply to family  ::)

One of the first times I took my New wife to the family farm she saw my nephew running a riding lawn mower,he was about 7 or 8 at the time. She remarked "Isn't that dangerous letting him operate that piece of equipment". I laughed and pointed to one of the big four wheeler tractors parked along side one of the pole barns and said he Operates that one too. "welcome to farm life dear".  :)

Naturally this course will be taught by overpaid civil service union members who never set foot outside of a city before, and the cost will be astronomical.

They're forging ahead on this?  They've been working on it for awhile, but I thought there was such a din about it that they abandoned the idea, embarrassed.  Guess not.  This is going to be a huge deal in a lot of this country.  My area included.

A government training course.   :bird:  I adored 4H as a kid.  WTF is going on here?

People should really stop blowing things like this off as just "more insanity from the left". The MAJORITY of the Democrat's platform can be found right here:

This is going to go over really big here in the midwest, where there are still a lot of family farms.  Farmers that haven't already made the swing to Republican (there aren't many left) are going to do it now.......

Between doubling the price of a combine with EPA dust emission standards and this......

Keep it up Barry, first you pissed off the Jews, then you did the same to the Catholics, now the farmers......you're down to blacks, homosexuals, welfare queens, and (some) union members.......at this rate you will be lucky to end up with 35% of the vote in November......

I want to see that little smug prick get his ass waxed at the polls in November. I want him beat so bad that he heads back to Chicago and spends the rest of his life in a state of dementia wondering why he's not as loved as the narcissistic ahole thinks he is.

Like the people in rural areas will obey this stupid dictum.
And what about those that don't...it used to be thought impossible for a parent to be hauled off to jail for spanking a kid.  How many kids died in car wrecks before the government decided that could be a crime by the parent?  How long ago did we think it laughable that a parent could ever get in trouble for smoking in front of a kid, baptising a kid, homeschooling...

Rural kids that get hurt, what should the parents do?  Hope they heal without medical help?  Tell the kid to lie to the doctor?  Or face the chance that they could go to prison for letting their child have a 4-H animal, run a tractor or perform any of 1000 chores that some citified government sissy would not approve?

And include such relevant topics as "Alternative Lifestyle/GLBT Sensitivity Training", "Sexual Harassment Sensitivity Training", "Ethnic Diversity Sensitivity Training", 90 hours of OSHA regs (with pass/fail exam)...

So millions of kids can't work on 4H or FFA projects, but the Obama kids can still feed and water Bo.

That is dumb...Having chores will not hurt a child. That is how kids become responsible and team playing adults. First life's lessons start in the home.

Senators and congressmen have introduced bills to combat this lunacy.  Here's a portion of a report from my local paper:

Farmers, legislators decry bill preventing teens from working on farms

ARTICLE OPTIONS
A A A

Ronald F. Porter, co-owner of Porterdale Farms in Adams Center, plans to hire his 12-year-old son, Andrew W., to work on the family’s 5,000-acre dairy farm when he’s 14, teaching him basic skills in farming and machinery.

But that plan could be scrapped if a regulation proposed by the U.S. Department of Labor takes effect this summer. It would prohibit 14- and 15-year-olds from driving tractors and operating other equipment on farms — even basic tasks would be off-limits except in limited circumstances.

The rule — unless it is blocked by lawmakers — would radically change the way 36,000 farms across New York do business.

While the Department of Labor has pledged to include an exemption allowing parents to let their biological children work, the regulation would not allow teens to work for anyone else, even an aunt, uncle or grandparent. Moreover, the “hazardous occupation” provision would mean that no 14- or 15-year-old, even a child working on his parents’ farm, could operate machinery that meets the definition of hazardous.

Although the rule may be well-intentioned — aiming to prevent injuries among teenagers — Mr. Porter said, it fails to address the fact that most farmers ensure their children are adequately trained to use dangerous equipment. He said it’s important to expose teenagers to farm work at an early age when they’re still choosing a career path.

“If a young person can’t get exposed to what’s involved in farming, it’s going to become challenging for them to choose it as a profession,” he said. “I’m looking for Andrew to start work when he’s 13 or 14. I was driving a tractor when I was that age and milking cows when I was 16.”

There’s already a scarcity of young people interested in careers in agriculture, Mr. Porter said. Not allowing them to work at a young age will make filling the older generation’s shoes even more challenging.

“Where is that going to leave the future of agriculture here?” he asked.

If the rule isn’t swiftly thwarted by lawmakers on Capitol Hill in the coming months, the effect on farmers across the state and in the north country could be “devastating,” said Rep. William L. Owens, D-Plattsburgh. Mr. Owens has co-sponsored a bill to prohibit the regulation from being approved.“You can imagine what the effect of this might be on farmers if it’s passed in the middle of the harvesting and production season,” he said, adding he started fighting the rule last year after hearing feedback from a 10-year-old boy at a Watertown City Council meeting who described how he wouldn’t be able to work on his family’s farm if the restriction passed.

I'm in a group of ranch people fighting this.  Here in Wyoming our one congresswoman is of course against it, so are our two senators.  But, so what.  We need the support of those in urban states.  We're supporting our fellow ag people in those states and hoping our message makes sense to people very far removed from ag.

That's the problem.  You all, here, are sensible.  Too many others are not.

I'm beginning to think this won't get by congress without them changing it.  Even quite a few of the DUmmies can see that this plan is a bad idea.  When the DUmmies can see it as bad for the same reasons we do, then we know it is really bad.

I was driving bulldozers at age 8. I wasn't allowed to push up trees because they had no cabs back then but I pushed a lot of dirt and plowed a lot of ground. They were straight drive machines without hydraulic assist steering. By age 10 I was hired out like the other drivers.
