My uncle's union just saved his life.
My uncle works for a major newspaper and is in a very powerful union. Over the last few weeks he has become very ill and was just diagnosed with a very serious, but treatable disease. He's been in the hospital for a little over a month, but thankfully he has excellent health insurance and 297 days of paid vacation (some that has been carried over) so he is not in any danger of bankruptcy and worse.

I spoke to him yesterday and his recovery is looking great.

Some companies allow vacation to carry over even those without unions.

No doubt paid vacation time carried over several years. Sort of like when I retired from the Army and had over 70 days of leave.

Not a big issue.

297 days?  Or hours?

That seems like an awful lot.  Any company I work for has had a cut off were one starts to lose their vacation if not taken.

That is about ten years of vacation time if you figure 30 days a year. it is also possible that the union got other members to donate vacation days to the guy. Once again, the whole story isn't presented, so it's kind of hard to jump on the outrage wagon.

These days every newspaper is tiptoeing along the edge of a precipice, with bankruptcy yawning below.

Every year a bunch of them topple into liquidation.

The innertubes, the 24-hour news cycle, and the price of newsprint are among the reasons, but none is as much to blame as crazy union abuses like this one.

Do you know how hard it is make a buck in the newspaper game these days?  If a business is struggling, this much paid time off is a big deal.  You have to pay that guy for the time, plus another one to cover the job, and work rules might jack that up to time and half.  I could see this union burying this newspaper.

Military is quite another matter.

Remember, this is a union worker we're talking about, so they might not need someone to take his place leaning against the wall drinking a cup of coffee.

I am not sure if this guy's union is like this but some public unions in WI had it set up where the members could bank unused vacation/sick time and then cash out when they retire. The problem with this was the payout was determined on an average of the last 3 year's hourly wage. So vacation/sick days earned as a new employee at $5 an hour could be cashed out as a retiree whose average wage was $25 an hour.

Some companies allow vacation to carry over even those without unions.

This is true, but most companies put a cap on it. The particular company in question seems to not do that.

I'm not so sure.  Remember, these are DUmmies, and lying is in their DNA.

When I read about the "297 days" of sick/vacation time accrued, I mentally moved the decimal point a place to the left to calibrate for the DUmmie propensity for prevarification.
29.7 days I could begin to believe.

But then again, it's still not a sure thing that the DUmmie actually has an uncle, or one who's sick, or one that's actually employed, by a major newspaper or any other entity.
His uncle's only contact with the newspaper may be that he uses it as a blanket on his favorite park bench at night. And as for him being  a very powerful man" at said newspaper, he may be referring to the stench which pervades the area downwind of him.

Yeah, the 297 days.

Non-union, we get 3 sick days a year.  Let's say uncle has a 30-year stint at the paper, and never calls in sick.  That would be 90 days accrued.

So the union secured 10 sick days per year, rollover-able, to get to about 300?  This paper deserves to go out of business, pronto, for shitty negotiating.   I doubt it's true, though.  Just a post to show HOW GREAT UNIONS ARE!!!!!

That is a good point. I didn't think of that.

My brother is head of a department at a local hospital. He gets a day vacation every two weeks (It coincides with his pay schedule), and carries over for year to year, up to 30 days. After that, they start losing the days.

Actually that isn't hard to believe at all if it is a union shop. I know 2 or 3 guys where i work who have been working here for 30+ years who have 300 sick days(12 a year until you hit 300 then it stops). These guys also have perfect attendance though and get 4 weeks vacation pay a year as well. What happens here is when you retire they give you 3% of your unused sick bank and whatever you have left for vacation time(they only let you carry over 5 vacation days into the next year so usually these guys at most get 5 weeks paid vacation at retirement if they haven't used any of their time.
