Bob Barr to run for president as a Libertarian
« on: May 12, 2008, 01:47:56 PM »
This could hurt McCain more than the crazy Ron Paul.  So-called "fiscal conservative social liberals" may flock to Barr, although the Libertarians haven't gotten generally more than 1% of the vote historically.

Bob Barr to run for president as a Libertarian

WASHINGTON -- Bob Barr, a former congressman from Georgia and a former Republican, today announced his candidacy for president as a Libertarian who would rein in federal spending and foreign wars.

"The government has run amok fiscally," he said at a press conference. Saying that during the first quarter of this year the private sector was losing millions of jobs while the federal government was "hiring with enthusiasm," Barr added, "As the American people see their standard of living falling, the standard of government keeps going up."

Expected to win the nomination of the Libertarian Party when it holds its convention in Denver over the Memorial Day weekend, Barr, 59, criticized Republican John McCain, the presumptive GOP nominee, for not being a true conservative.

"There's not a great deal of substance there in terms of a commitment to cutting the size of government," Barr said He said no one who had authored the McCain-Feingold campaign reforms that cap individual donations could call himself a conservative, "at least with a straight face."

I've pretty much decided that I'm not going to vote for McCain unless I really like his veep selection (as a Texan, if he needs my vote to win the state, he probably wouldn't be doing too well in the rest of the country, anyway).  That being said, the more candidates to choose from the merrier.

1% in the wrong place is potentially doomsday.  500 votes in Florida out of 6,000,000 votes cast in 2000 would have given us president gore on 9/11.

True, and given that McCain's key constituency is the so-called Republican moderates, that is the "fiscal conservative/socially liberal" voter, this may be an even bigger blow than the 1% indicates.  That small number, added to the larger number of true conservatives who will not vote for McCain due to his liberal views on immigration, the environment, and other such issues, could result in President Obama.  That's why, like him or not, I'm going to end up voting for him.

Didn't he sponsor the Defense of Marriage Act? That kind of flies in the face of Libertartan values doesn't it?

He has an odd background (position-wise) to say the least.

No, my friends, there’s only one really progressive idea. And that is the idea of legally limiting the power of the government. That one genuinely liberal, genuinely progressive idea — the Why in 1776, the How in 1787 — is what needs to be conserved. We need to conserve that fundamentally liberal idea. That is why we are conservatives. --Bill Whittle

Outside of the deep south, his vote numbers will be a piddling amount. I don't think there is a southern state that Obama can carry so the damage to McCain will be nill.

Oregon has been real close the last several times.

President McCain bugs me a whole lot.  Do we really want someone whose main claim to fame is that he got caught with his hands in the cookie jar during the S & L mess?   And has spent most of his time since then lecturing on the evils of corrupt politicians?  :banghead: :puke: :pisscontest:

How did we get into this mess where we have two such total losses as aspirants for the highest office?  There are 300 million of us, and this is the best we can do?

Anyway, end of october when I send the ballot back in, unless it is real real close, I think I will go  third party.   I am not endorsing McCain, but no way will I permit Obama to win if I can help it.

I'm from GA and that is the first thing that pops in my head when I hear his name, not his record.  I can only imagine what the rest of the country is thinking, especially young people.
