Manager Ozzie Guillen has been suspended for five games for comments he made in support of Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, the Miami Marlins announced Tuesday.

"The pain and suffering caused by Fidel Castro cannot be minimized, especially in a community filled with victims of the dictatorship," the team said in a statement just prior to Guillen's scheduled press conference.

Guillen, 48, who began the press conference by speaking in Spanish, said he was "very embarrassed" by his comments and apologized several times. He claimed a reporter misinterpreted his comments and said he does not love or admire Castro.

The suspension will begin immediately. Guillen left the Marlins in Philadelphia and flew to Miami to apologize at the team's new ballpark.

"It's a very sad situation because the ball club is playing pretty good baseball right now," Guillen said. "It's very important for me to be with the club, but the decision has been made and I respect the decision. I cannot complaint about anything because right now I'm not in a position to complain."

Guillen told Time magazine he loves Castro and respects him for staying in power so long. Prior to Monday's game, Guillen said he has suffered sleepless nights because of the comments and wanted to make an apology.

Guillen has always let his godzilla mouth write checks his canary @ss can't cash. Thankfully this time the management decided not to just laugh it off and say "that's just Ozzie being Ozzie". Especially since they are in a new stadium and relying heavily on the local Cuban population to fill the seats.

I understand the outrage, but come on, this is getting ridiculous. The Cuban community now says they're going to boycott until he's fired. It's obvious he's not a Fidel supporter, just talking about him not being removed. He trashes that idiot Sean Penn after he talked about how great his native country of Venezuela was under Chavez.

Oh, and if you didn't know what you were getting with Ozzie, you were idiots. He's the most colorful and opinionated guy out there.

I just heard about this on dan Lebetard is Highly Questionable (ESPN2). He always has his dad on the show, and he's Cuban-American. They both believed Ozzie's apology and believed he was sincere.

I worked with a native Spanish speaker, and sometimes he would say things incorrectly in English, so I can believe Ozzie's explanation. I also agree with you that Miami knew what they were getting. I follow Ozzie on twitter just for entertainment value...some of his English tweets are hilarious (I can't read his Spanish tweets).

They're entitled to exercise THEIR freedom of speech as well, sir.  Seems to me someone who's lived under Castro's regime and escaped it might have a little more accurate perspective for evaluating the merits of Castro and his crimes against humanity, then some pampered leftist pud from Venezuela.

They aren't outraged over someone exercising their freedom of speech.   They are outraged because the manager of the team they support loves a communist dictator. 

Honestly, Red Sox fans would run Valentine out of town if he professed love for the Yankees to this level.    Freedom of speech doesn't give you freedom from consequences of running your idiotic mouth.     Those consequences in this instance being financial.    :-)

Is the government censoring Guillen?  Nope.  Are private citizens expressing THEIR concern over what Guillen said?  Are they speaking with their wallets?  You betcha.

Remember, the First Amendment means freedom of speech, not freedom from criticism when you say stupid shit.  Nor does it protect you if and when a private company (of which the Miami Marlins qualify) tosses your ass to the curb for said stupid shit--remember John Rocker?  Fuzzy Zoeller?

I agree 100% that it was quite possibly the dumbest thing someone could've said in that position, but guess what? I live in Miami and my taxpayer dollars were used to spend (or subsidize) $400,000,000 on a stadium, so it's a little frustrating, when this whole thing was ultimately taken out of context. 

Ozzie Guillen has this persecution complex - he always thinks someone is out to **** him, so he made the huge mistake to relate his plight to that of Fidel Castro's, by saying that he "loves" Castro because despite being one of the most reviled individuals by his own people, he's still in power.  The idiot(Ozzie) doesn't speak English very well, so his translation came across like he was saying he LOVES Castro and supports - his Venezuelan ties make it even worse. 

Now my point about freedom of speech - you're absolutely right, everyone in this context has the right to express their freedom of speech in whichever side of this you may fall - I actually blame Miami's Marlins management, because they knew exactly what they were getting with Ozzie Guillen, and it took only till game 3 of the season for them to get it.  :hammer:
