Prominent Democrat says GOP not waging 'war on women'
« on: April 09, 2012, 06:21:23 AM »
The chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus said Sunday that "it's wrong" for Democrats to accuse Republicans of waging a "war on women."

"Yes, that is wrong. And I've never said it, not one time," Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, D-Mo., said, speaking on CNN's "State of the Union."
Cleaver made the statement when asked directly about Democratic claims that recent GOP legislation on abortion and other issues is tantamount to a campaign against women.

"I condemn it. If it's a Democrat, if it's my cousin, it's wrong," Cleaver said. "And I think we need to stop that. It is damaging the body politic and it's further separating the people in this country."

Cleaver, though, said the same holds true for Republicans accusing President Obama of waging a war on religion -- something former GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry, among others, has done.

Cleaver urged lawmakers and politicians to dial back the campaign-season rhetoric.

"We've got to quit exaggerating our political differences," he said. "If you believe that the president is a Christian ... you still come to the belief that he's trying to destroy religion in this country? I think we've got to stop it. That is not doing this country this any good at all."

Oh, I can't wait to see what the DUmp thinks about this!  Good on Rep. Emanuel Cleaver for having the courage to say this.

There's two more paragraphs in the story.  The thing is, in the last paragraph above, Republicans have been correct in their assertions, when the Catholic Church gets singled out by Obamacare.

Cleaver won reelection in 2006 and 2008 by 30 points.  He won in 2010 by 9 points.

Now Euph and the other MO folks can obviously give much better indication of how redistricting is working there, but I'm gonna take a SWAG and say he's covering his ass and playing to the moderates in order to save his political skin.

He's nowhere near my district, which has been solid red for a long time and will stay there, so I don't know much about him,  But just speaking generically, just because he's a Democrat doesn't mean he can't have any standards or principles.  I will always vote against them since they will invariably stand with their national party program over the interests of their own district, State, and even common sense, but they aren't all total and complete assholes, I can respect some of them even if I won't vote for them.

True, there are Democrats with standards, and some of them are good and noble ones.  But only someone totally naive would think that Rep. Cleaver was being totally altruistic in his statement yesterday, when he takes a 20-point swing towards his opponent in 2010, and the possibility of losing his seat this year (to the same gent, IIRC) a distinct possibility.

Werd.  I expect what's really going on here is that he has a lot of Catholics and anti-abortion Protestant Black churches in his district, and the whole 'War on women' isn't selling to them all that well, while the 'War on Religion' this is being taken seriously.

Yeah, I'm not privy to Cleaver much though I'd say his district is probably in and around St. Louis.

The last time I looked at the redistricting issue, it was still tied up in the courts.

Cleaver urged lawmakers and politicians to dial back the campaign-season rhetoric.

"We've got to quit exaggerating our political differences," he said. "If you believe that the president is a Christian ... you still come to the belief that he's trying to destroy religion in this country?......."

And there's the rub. I don't think he's a Christian at all.

Nor is a muslim.

Barry is a political hack who showed up in Wright's church just for appearances. Some argument could be made about Wright's inflammatory rhetoric and anti-American hate speech, but I'd submit that Barry paid little or no attention to that shit -- his main focus was simply showing up so he could be seen in church.

The last time I looked at the redistricting issue, it was still tied up in the courts.

His district is metro Kansas City, and although he (and his father) are legends there, he's still scum.  He calls himself  a "minister", and flies home every weekend on the taxpayers dime to preach on Sunday mornings.......he has had a number of personal scandals emerge regarding his unpaid taxes and his abuse of public funds in prior public offices.........

His support has been gradually eroding, both through district realignments as well as "gentrification" in many of the previously black parts of his district.......

One must overlook his occasional bouts with lucidity (even a broken clock, etc.).......he's basically "Reverend Wright" with a seat in congress........

Thanks for the correction, doc. I knew it was going to be one end of the state or another, and I guessed the wrong end and didn't have time enough to look it up.

Yeah, and he must have worn an ipod, because, allegedly he did not hear one sermon in 20 years of black liberation theology aka rape-a-nations.
