primitives discuss plans for Easter dinner

Oh my.

One's waxing nostalgic for Mrs. Alfred Packer, the hippywife primitive, to point out she and hippyhubby Wild Bill don't do Easter.  But alas Mrs. Alfred Packer long ago went to that meat-locker in the sky.

Easter Dinner menus (or plans)

Let's share.

I haven't a clue yet, but if I can someone to bring me a leg of lamb, that would be my first choice.

Looking at my current supplies, it might be potatoes....

and more potatoes....

and more potatoes.

(DH went a little overboard on the potatoes on last trip to town).

Well, one hopes the cbayer primitive doesn't ruin yet another blouse, swilling wine on it.

1. I have several things to cook for that weekend

So I'm thinking I might get some leg of lamb and freeze it for later.

My husband is a shape-note singer, and the Iowa Convention is Saturday, with the traditional potluck "dinner on the grounds". I don't enjoy shape-note singing but want to support him, so am preparing Paska, a Russian style Easter bread, and an antipasto salad for him to take.

Sunday is a potluck brunch at church. The Paska recipe is big, so I'll take some of that, and probably a strata with ham and asparagus, and if I get ambitious, fresh pineapple and strawberries cut up, and mix in some homemade orange jelly to sweeten.

So after preparing that, I don't know that I'll want to cook a big feast to have when my husband gets home from working on Sunday. So I think I'll bake some ham and sweet potatoes, and we can also have asparagus, pineapple and strawberries, and Paska.

Here's a link for the Paska recipe: http://www.mennonitegirlscancook.ca/2009/03/paska-lovellas-recipe.html

2. No plans

having the easter egg hunt at my house in the am and then Kev getting the kids @2. Might go to a freinds house for dinner or maybe I'll just make myself some scalloped potatos, fresh green beans and get a ham steak.

5. Will be at SIL's place, and don't know what they are planning

I just got some bacon and eggs on sale at Costco, so will take those down. That's sort of a tradition with us. Our kids are too old for Easter egg hunts and too young to reproduce.

6. We're having a Swedish Buffet

We didn't make it to IKEA for theirs so we're doing our own...

A ham, some salmon
that potato dish I can never remember the name of...
herring of all kinds
deviled eggs with shrimp
cucumber salad

7. Maybe just a pumpkin pie. - just that.

It works.

10. Picnic in the park is the latest idea. Sister's going to do some sort of ham, bring it sliced.

I'll probably bring lentil salad, humus and flat bread and see if I can coax my brother into some fried asparagus spears.

Sis and BIL won't eat lamb. So it's not an option, though I'd go for lamb skewers on a park BBQ in a heart beat.

12. I'm remembering a few dishes that have been great over the years.

We had a Russian Easter dinner one year. Dishes included:

A salmon coulibiac -- the fish is wrapped in a pastry, with decorations made from the dough, and egg glazed. It's beautiful.

Kvas. This is a fermented beverage made from bread. Interesting! Never made anything else like that.

Various salads with sour cream and fresh dill.

Can't remember the rest. But Russian is a good way to go for themed spring feast.

Whew.

<<wiping sweat from brow.

I'd feared either Opus Dei kidnapped her, or Skins had mausoleumed her as a crank.

13. Mostly traditional stuff.

Ham, kielbasi, paprika bacon, deviled eggs, potato salad, cucumber salad and sweet potatoes. My daughter and I made ravioli a few weeks ago so I'll make a pan of those too. My daughter's birthday is on Sunday and she asked for a Carvel ice cream cake for dessert. That works for me.

20. I cook for my family...

apparently no else has a stove.

Ham
Chicken
Greens (collards made with smoked ham hock, ham bone)
Tater salad
Coleslaw
Mac and cheese
roasted green beans with bacon bits
corn bread muffins
tossed salad

haven't figured out dessert, probably a pig pickin' cake. I'll tell one of my brothers to bring something else.

Wine--lots of wine for me. Moscato.

forgot asparagus.

21. Can I come over???

That sounds yummy.

I am trying pan roasted duck breast with a blueberry chutney. Also, I feel like roast asparagus and new potatoes. Maybe a field green or arugula salad.

22. Today my back was good enough for me to drive to the grocery store and stand in line. First time in 3 weeks.

I bought a leg of lamb, some sweet potatoes, some eggplant and some cabbage for Easter dinner to have with rice and rolls. The Catholics in this house may be lapsed, but our holiday dinner won't be, lol. Maybe on Saturday I'll pick up a chocolate cake and some flowers for Mom. If all goes well, I want to get some chocolate truffles for her but that's another day of this spine not acting up so I can drive out to the mall. We'll see.

Hitler was a lapsed Catholic, but never mind.....

Anyway, franksolich on Sunday will go to the big city, to dine on turkey, mashed potatoes and gravy, fresh corn and peas, whole-wheat rolls with real butter, and pumpkin pie.

The usual holiday meal for me; New Year's Day, my birthday, H.M. the Queen's birthday, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, Labor Day, Veterans' Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas.  Nothing beats it.

I've long wondered why the DUmmies don't seem to have the disdain for Easter that they do for Christmas.  Sure, you see a few posts about Easter, but it pales in comparison to their impotent rage for that "evil" holiday in December.

Not so much figuring them out, just wondered why they aren't more consistent in their hatred.  Maybe they're just outraged out?  Nah, that'll never happen.  Something will always be pissing them off.

I so can't stand fish, and I think Lamb is worse. I can't even describe the taste of it, it's just yucky to me, everyone around me likes it though but they don't buy it because it's too expensive. I don't like duck or hen either, doesn't taste like chicken at all.

I had to nadin "shape note singing", and I still have no idea what it is.

Between that and poor, addled grasswipe going to wikipedia to come up with names of those goofy dishes, this was a confusing thread.

Then the catbox squatter's girlfriend says she doesn't like dick. I give up.

I love rack of lamb. Crusted in garlic and cracked pepper.

Or little lamb chops marinated in a good Italian vinegrette and grilled.

If y'all are thinkin' lamb is sticky, either you weren't eating lamb or someone really screwed up the cooking.  :o

Try marinating your lamb chops in straight Wild Turkey Honey Liqueur for 8 hours and then grilling while using hickory chips for smoke.
"We make men without chests and expect of them virtue and enterprise. We laugh at honor and are shocked to find traitors in our midst. We castrate and then bid the geldings to be fruitful."
