Welcome to Mooseport:
A US president (Gene Hackman) who has retired after two terms in office returns to his hometown of Mooseport, Maine and decides to run for Mayor against another local candidate (Ray Romano).
How this relates to Fond du Lac, WI (Pop. approx. 40,000)
Peg Lautenschlager, former WI Attorney General and US Attorney, is running for the local FDL school board against an incumbent named Eric Everson, a local businessman. What is interesting is not the fact that Peg, a former high office holder in WI, is running for a nothing school board seat but the resources she is using to do it.
The state GAB (Gov't Accountability Board) has allowed her to use her left over AG campaign war chest to pay for her to campaign for a non-partisan local election. Because of this she can afford to have a full time staffer (who is normally on the state democrat party payroll) do the grunt work for her campaign.
Using ACT 10 Everson and other board members were able to lower costs, reduce class sizes and replace teachers who had retired. Peg is running against that. It will be interesting to see how Fond du Lac votes today. The city does have a strong union presence but is also a GOP stronghold.
To put this in a way that would relate to everyone on CC. Imagine if Steve Dawes (Socialist-NE) had got his job as Sec of Labor. Then once he did the minimal amount of time needed to collect lifetime federal benefits decided to retire back to Bellevue and run for the city council.
