Lu knows how to cook rice

Oh my.

You know, I'm not kidding when I insist that Lu is an improvement of several magnitudes over, as the driving force behind the cooking and baking primitives, than the sullen hate-filled Mrs. Alfred Packer had been.

Lucinda's perfect rice

I have struggled with rice for a long time and sought the advice of Lucinda.

Last night I made it exactly as she instructed and it was perfect.

Here are her instructions:

1 1/2 cup water
1 cup rice
1/2 tsp salt
1 tablespoon of butter

Put it all in a pot, bring it to a boil and give it a quick stir, then turn it down to low, cover and leave alone for 20* minutes.

At 20 minutes, take off the lid for just a few seconds to let steam escape, and turn off the heat. Recover right away, let sit for 5 more minutes, then fluff.

*It can go as long as 25 minutes before you let the steam out if you like really dry rice.

I do use jasmine rice instead of basmati, but thats our preference, and I cook it in a regular stainless saucepan with glass lid though the video suggests a heavier pan.

Thank you, Lucinda. Probably most people know this already, but I was doing it all wrong.

1. I'm so glad you like the way it turns out!

It's always perfect for me when I do it this way. Not one failure ever. Nice and fluffy.

2. It was perfect, Lucinda, and I am so pleased.

I served it with a great thai chicken curry that I made.

We will be eating it again tonight, and I can not thank you enough for the lesson.

Have a great dinner!

4. If I'm making rice for a chicken dish.

I cook the rice in chicken broth instead of water.

5. Congrats! Nothing like really good rice. My disasters usually end up in soup.

Or mixed in the dog dish if my sister's Dachshund is here.

6. As Mollie Katzen said - "You don't check in on it every two minutes to see if it's still there."

It has to steam.

7. Can't remember where I heard this hint, maybe here, but I have great success with....

...the suggestion to leave the top on the rice when done for 5-10 minutes. Somehow, the rice is much fluffier and less sticky when I do this. I never knew this hint, and I've been cooking for ages and ages and ages!!!!!

Well, Lu, who reminds one very much of a kindly old grandmother whose body's too large to hold the love she has for others, manages to illuminate us about food without injecting any hate, rage, bitterness, spite, and Godphobia into the discussion.

Well, now, that pretty much cinches it.

A real person with those attributes could not participate in a site that's based on hate, rage, bitterness, spite, and Godphobia.

This isn't going to get franksolich any brownie points with the fecund grasswire primitive, who's linked franksolich to everything from her own failure to open a pie-and-jam shoppe to murder of the red round one to getting the bitter old Vermontese cali primitive fired from her job to creating www.electstevedawes.com to driving Mrs. Alfred Packer, the hippywife primitive, away from Skins's island.....

.....but really, Lu on her bad days is so much better than Mrs. Alfred Packer ever was on her good days.

Gotta add a pat of butter to it when it's done. Separates the kernels.

Add 1/4 cup of water and its the cooking instructions of the bag of rice! Genius!
"Liberalism is an essentially feminine, submissive world view. Perhaps a better adjective than feminine is infantile. It is the world view of men who do not have the moral toughness, the spiritual strength to stand up and do single combat with life, who cannot adjust to the reality that the world is not a huge, pink-and-blue, padded nursery in which the lions lie down with the lambs and everyone lives happily ever after."

Nah.  Then the stuff falls all over the place when you try to eat it.
It's a lot easier when it's all stuck together. :-)

Sticky rice.  Dash of vinegar.  Cover and cool over night.

Damn straight skippy.

Use some hot n spicy vinegar or soy sauce to add a spice to life . Although I usually steam my rice.

It is said that branches draw their life from the vine. Each is separate yet all are one as they share one life giving stem . The Bible tells us we are called to a similar union in life, our lives with the life of God. We are incorporated into him; made sharers in his life. Apart from this union we can do nothing.

Can these sooper jeanuses figure out how to make toast?

Rice? Really rice?

Humanity would be so much improved if the lot of them (-moles) were eliminated from the gene pool.

RICE? My God.

That's probably why Chrome Dome and Sherlock grasswire don't hang around in the cooking and baking forum much any more.

They don't want a gracious hostess who's sweet; they want a hostess who Hates.

Having so much hate isn't good at all for people, you end up getting a mean look on your face.

Most gifted and talented people in the history of the universe, just ask them, can't figure out the intricacies of boiling water and measuring.  Is it any wonder they are life's losers? NO.
