grocery store intercoms
« on: March 30, 2012, 12:37:10 PM »
I was in the big city this morning, and on my way out of town again, I stopped at a Hy-Vee grocery store to pick up some coffee and stuff.

During a casual encounter with someone I vaguely know, I learned that grocery stores apparently hammer the ear-drums of customers while they're shopping.

I didn't know that.

I guess I never knew it before, because I never saw shoppers stopping in mid-bend-over or braking shopping carts and looking upward, as if they're trying to hear something.  Or some other sort of body-language hinting they might be listening to something.

Is this phenomenon common?

Does anybody pay attention?

It's common, especially at the checkout line. It's also really irritating.

Yes.

No, unless it's a price check for something I bought.

Payments to foreign governments must be reduced, if the nation doesn't want to go bankrupt. People must again learn to work, instead of living on public assistance.”

The worst store (at least in the Midwest) is Menards.  They seem to be playing their jingle on a continuous loop and very loud.

Shop Rite plays music, then they'll break through sometimes to announce if bread just came out of the oven or any other baked goods have come out of the oven, or if meat is on sale.
