With their gun laws? I'd just buy Haiti and announce myself dictator. Should be able to get it for a cool 2 mil.

Hey, I'd be like a rich democrat politician then....laws wouldn't apply to me.

Because if they draw say 540 sets of numbers? there could possibly be tens of thousands of people with the winning numbers, so people would be thousandaires instead of millionaires.

I was going to say, if 540 people pick the same winning number it would work out the way the DUmmie said. It was a stupid point.

The ex-husband of my best friend from high school won $1.3 million in Vegas. After walking in and quitting his job, taxes, buying a new house, new cars, buying his new wife a tanning salon (that went under a year later), among other things...he was broke two years later.  It's the same story you hear over and over again.

$1.3MM would be a nice cha-ching, not nearly enough to retire on. Multiply that by 10 and after taxes you could have a decent existence living on the interest. But not opulent.

A few lottery tickets when the jackpot is over $100 million or so is worth their price just for the entertainment value.  You can have yourself a nice little daydream about what you would do with the money, and when you don't win you didn't blow much more than a cup of coffee.

Hell for that much cash you could easily fly between your "Outback block" and the city, ride the copter out to the marina, and head offshore in the boat.

That reminds me of the scene in Bruce Almighty where he gets tired of answering every prayer so he says yes to everything, and everyone only gets $17 when they win the lottery.

Lotteries are a tax on the stupid and the poor.

That is a perfect description of state lotteries.

The only difference from the old numbers racket is that now the odds of winning are far slimmer.

Well, let's see...if I'm up $500 Million clams come tomorrow, I think a nice little flat on Hamilton Island would be a nice place to spend a few months each year.  I remember that contest that was held to pick a blogger a few years back.

I really have no problem with gambling - over here just about every pub/club/etc has poker machines.

I look at them as a tax refund device due the the principle demographic of "problem gamblers".

Some like 50% of the revenue collected goes back to the government and the rest goes to the venue - which helps them employ staff and pay the bills.

We have scratch-offs and various forms of lotto/powerball as well. All are heavily taxed - but this is one instance where I have trouble seeing a problem with said taxes.

Noted that I don't gamble in any way shape or form, so the tax paid is entirely voluntary.

8. No--I'm saying that the probability of winning it is so infinitesimal

that it instills false hope in people, many of whom cannot realistically afford to throw money away by playing it.

Lotteries are also inherently undemocratic. They allow one person (or a small number of people) to become instant millionaires by sheer chance, without doing anything to earn that wealth by skill or merit. They take money from many (mostly poor or lower- to middle-income) to enrich a few for no other reason than luck of the draw. This goes against everything that a liberal democracy should stand for.
Then move somewhere that has one. Or did you fall asleep in civics class?

That sorta cash would buy you Dunk Island - which was flattened by a major cyclone (hurricane) not so long ago. Spend 50 mil redeveloping the resort there and you'd be rolling in cash in 12 months tops.

With my winnings I think I would buy that little place near Williamsburg, VA. 400 acres, 2 miles of shoreline, a beautiful historic stone house and 5 guest cottages. Part of it is set up for horse farm and the rest for hunting. Originally a kings deed so the property pre-dates the country.
Would set up a nice horse breeding/training operation and hunt/fish on the rest. Think I would be pretty happy there. :-)

If my horses are on your property then I am the one with the problem. :rotf:
I am pretty anal about my fences. As long as I can track a deer that I shot if it runs across your property then we split the meat and all is good. :-)
