How to reboot from a disc?
« on: March 28, 2012, 05:58:06 PM »
I'm going to try (gasp!) to wipe this pc and want to install Windows 7 as the OS.  It has Vista now and I hate it.  I've been told to get the upgrade and choose to boot from the disc, how do I found out where the prompt is?

go into your BIOS settings and make sure they are set to boot off the CD Rom and that it is before the hard drive in the boot order.  Once you put the CD in the drive and turn it on, it will ask you to press a key to boot to the CD

Insert the disc into the drive and restart the machine.

After the initial BIOS screen you should see the computer display a message saying "Press any key to boot from CD".

This happens when the screen is still in the black and white text mode you see before windows starts.

Should this fail you'll need to go into your BIOS configuration by pressing the appropriate key immediately after powering on the machine - this key varies but is often something like DEL , F2 or F10 - Once in there you'll need to ensure that your CD/DVD drive is first on the "boot order".

F12 is usually the boot selector menu.

Depends on the manufacturer. Mine is the delete key. Some are F2, some are F10, too.

If the disc is in the drive won't it automatically prompt?  The pc is a HP.  I'm in way over my head here  :whatever:

I've decided not to attempt this until I move, a few months from now.  I do have a back-up computer in case I flub it.

Thanks for the help, really.

Some, I just imaged 45 of them.  Boot menu was ESC.
