Any ideas?
« on: May 10, 2008, 04:04:26 PM »
I'm looking for homeopathic type remedies for an earache...my daughter's ear is plugged nad hurting, but I'd rather not do antibiotics since that's all that's bothering her...any pain relief ideas that might help?

I know ya'll aren't doc, but I'm looking for good old fashioned home remedies....if she's not better by the beginning of the week, I'll take her to the Dr.

It's plugged?  With what?

I went swimming in the ocean a couple years ago and got some crud stuck in my ear.  I thought it was an infection, but I went to the doctor and they confirmed it was just some schmeg.  They were able to clear it out with a squeze bulb full of warm water.

its an ear infection...fluid in the Eustachian tubes, behind the eardrum...classical symptoms, but I was hoping it would resolve itself without antibiotics...so far no luck and it's been about 3 days.

I did some quick Googling, and a home remedy for fluid in the ear may be a few drops of white vinegar.

Looking at the various home remedies they seen to fall into a couple of different groups; stopping the infection and pain/discomfort relief.

Re. the infection, something mildly acidic seems popular to interfere with the bacterial growth. Suggestions are: a couple of drops of the juice from some briefly microwaved grated onion; or lemon juice or white vinegar.  For pain relief

take a clean long sock, most likely a mens sock, put about a cup of rice in the sock and heat it in the microwave for about a min. then put it on the ear that is hurting and take some pain med. not only does this take away the pressure causing the pain but if you do this often enough it will drain the build up in your ear

alternatively a little olive oil administered by dropper is also recommended by some.

Personally I'd try the sock/rice combo first before putting stuff directly in the ear.

sock+rice+ear sounds kinda gross.

A little white vinegar won't hurt anything.  Sounds reasonable to me.   :-)

It would do for a man, we ladies would take care to use a clean sock, not just fish one out of the laundry basket.  :-)

At Walmart they have this oil stuff in the ear wash/eye drops area.  I bought it because I get ear infections like Paris Hilton gets herpes.  It really helps relieve the pain.  The brand name is Auro.  I also have a rice sock.  I put a cup of water in the microwave when I heat it so it is a moist heat.  So soothing!
