In high school, the Catholics I had the most exposure to, emphasized the "via media". I never did get that, it's like not wanting to take a stand.
The Pope got excoriated for the same thinking, and policy during the holocaust. I remember my childhood and later years being taught about all the martyrs. I really admired that even under the most harsh circumstances, they would not denounce their God. I also remember thinking "I would hate to have to die the way these martyrs did".
I mean, let's face it, the bible is unapologetically socially conservative. I would argue it is quite fiscally conservative, but I think that possibly honest debate could be made on that aspect. If you look at the central character of the bible, He never tried to sit on any fences. He was about as in your face as anyone could get, and didn't back down. He probably tried to be as gentle and persuasive as he could, but in the end He didn't compromise his principles or his message.
The church needs to more closely align with this example if anyone were to ask me, which they haven't. But thanks for listening anyway.
